Alabama Track and Field Opens NCAA Championships Competition Wednesday in Oregon

The Crimson Tide has 13 women and 13 men slated for the action at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, site of this year’s NCAA Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – With the final practice of the 2021-22 season in the books here in Eugene, Ore., the Alabama track and field teams are ready to roll at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus when the NCAA Outdoor Championships get underway Wednesday.
Alabama has 26 student-athletes set to compete at the national championships, including 13 women and 13 men. In all, Alabama is set to compete in 14 individual events and three relays.
The men will compete on Wednesday and Friday, while the women go Thursday and Saturday. There are 24 student-athletes or relays in every event, 12 each from the NCAA East and West Preliminaries. The top-eight finishers in each event will score points toward the team total.
Alabama Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"Coming back to Hayward Field for the national championships, it just never gets old. It's a beautiful venue and obviously we're going to have good weather the first few days. We're looking forward to some great performances. The nice thing is that the schedule is so friendly and so fast that every time you look up there's going to be an Alabama track and field athlete running around."

- The championships will be broadcast on ESPNU on Wednesday (4:30 p.m. PT) and Thursday (5:30 p.m. PT), on ESPN2 on Friday starting at 6 p.m. PT and on ESPN on Saturday, starting at 2:30 p.m. PT
Day One for the Crimson Tide Men (Wednesday)
- Bobby Colantonio Jr. gets things started for Alabama on Wednesday at 2 p.m. PT with the men's hammer throw
- The 2022 NCAA weight throw champion, Colantonio Jr. is among the top seeds in the hammer coming into the week
- Eliud Kipsang gets things rolling on the track with the semifinals of the 1,500 meters at 4:45 p.m. PT
- The collegiate record holder in the 1,500 meters, Kipsang finished fourth in the event at last year's NCAA Championships
- Other semifinals on Wednesday include Khaleb McRae (400 meters/6 p.m. PT), Corde Long (400-meter hurdles/6:30 p.m. PT), Tarsis Orogot (200 meters/6:45 p.m. PT)
- In addition to Colantonio Jr. in the hammer, Isaac Odugbesan and Chago Basso will compete in the finals of the shot put starting at 6:40 p.m. PT
- Odugbesan scored in the shot put at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships and competed in the shot put for the Tide at the 2021 indoor and outdoor national championships
- Basso competed in the shot put at the outdoor national championships in both 2019 and 2021 (there were no NCAA track and field championships in 2020 due to COVID-19)
- Victor Kiprop will run the last individual final of the day, the 10,000 meters, starting at 7 p.m. PT
- The Crimson Tide's 4x400-meter relay will close out day one at 7:45 p.m. PT
- Those semifinalists who move on will compete on Friday
Day One for the Alabama Women (Thursday)
- The UA women open their NCAA Championships slate on Thursday with the 4x100-meter relay semifinals at 5:30 p.m. PT, followed by Flomena Asekol in the 1,500 meters semifinal at 5:45 p.m. PT
- Samantha Zelden will compete in the finals of the javelin at 6:45 p.m. PT
- Amari Brown will run the 200 meters semifinal at 7:45 p.m. PT while 4x400-meter relay semifinals close the day at 8:45 p.m. PT
- Mercy Chelangat will run the last individual event of the night, the final of the 10,000 meters, which gets underway at 8:05 p.m. PT
- Chelangat, the NCAA runner-up in the 10,000 meters in 2021, will also run the 5,000 meters on Saturday along with Amaris Tyynismaa
- Chelangat was third in the 5,000 meters at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships while Tyynismaa scored in the 1,500 meters at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships
- Those semifinalists who move on will also compete on Saturday
