
Four Indoor Track and Field Records Shattered at South Carolina Invitational

Record-breaking performances were posted in the men’s heptathlon and mile and also the women’s 3000m on Saturday
COLUMBIA, S.C. – A quartet of Alabama track and field student-athletes made Crimson Tide history with record-breaking performances at the South Carolina Invitational Saturday.
The UA track and field indoor record book was rewritten in men's heptathlon and mile and also the women's 3000m inside the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.
School Records
- Jake Spotswood opened the day by finishing the men's heptathlon in third place with 5,447 points
- The 5,447 points put him 108 past the old program record holder Michael Hughes (5,339) from Feb. 25-26, 2011
- In the women's 3000m, Mercy Chelangat crushed a 34-year old UA record with a NCAA No. 2 leading time of 9:02:54
- The indoor 3000m program record was previously held by Liz Lynch (9:05.94) from Feb. 12, 1986
- Just a second after Chelangat, Amaris Tyynismaa crossed the finish line to post a NCAA top-five time of 9:03:46
- With a time of 3:57:83, Eliud Kipsang shattered a 21-year old program record in the men's indoor mile, which was previously held by Tim Broe (3:59.38) from Feb. 12, 1999
- The rookie captured his first sub-four mile with a 28.9 final 200m and broke the facility record
Field Events
- In his season debut, Bobby Colantonio Jr. secured a runner-up finish in the men's weight throw with a toss of 22.07m, while Kieran McKeag (19.85m) placed fifth
- With a launch of 15.96m, Cherisse Murray placed fourth and Nickolette Dunbar (15.94m) finished sixth in women's shot put
- Isaac Odugbesan earned his second victory of the season with a toss of 19.33m in men's shot put, while fellow teammates Chago Basso (6th, 16.44m) and Nathan Cooper (7th, 15.62m) rounded out the group
- In women's weight throw, Taylor Gorum (19.67m) put together a sixth place showing
- Taylor Pickett closed out the day in women's pole vault with a leap of 3.78m to place eighth
Track Events
- In her first indoor meet of the season, Jami Reed placed second in the women's mile lapping the track in a time of 4:43.36
- Lauren Turner (2:08.74) paced the UA women in the 800m with a fourth-place finish
- Alabama went 9-10-11 in the men's 3000m with Noel Rotich (9th, 8:27.44), Mateo Barreto (10th, 8:28.71) and Paul Selden (11th, 8:30.31)
- Haley Wright 18:00.47 led the Crimson Tide women in the 5000m with a third-place finish, while Jack Hawes (14:53.12) paced the men's squad finishing fifth
- The final track event for the day was the men's DMR, who shaved a few seconds off their time with a 10:03.87

The Crimson Tide will head to Tyson Invitational (Feb. 12-13) next weekend for its first of three meets in Fayetteville, Ark.
