Doris Lemngole Crowned Steeplechase Champion on Second Day of 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships

Lemngole claimed the programs’ first gold medal in the women’s steeplechase behind a meet and facility record to conclude the second day
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In the final event on the second day of the 2024 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Doris Lemngole (9:28.21) claimed gold in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking both a meet and facility record, en route to Alabama's first gold medal in the event.
On the men's side, Carson Burian also medaled in the steeplechase, running 8:59.72 to give the junior a silver medal – the Tide's first second-place finish in the event since Antibahs Kosgei in 2017.
Before the night was over, Tarsis Orogot (100m | 10.17), Samuel Ogazi (400m | 45.49) and Khaleb McRae (400m | 44.76) qualified for their respective events on Saturday's final. McRae's 400-meter, personal-best time of 44.76 leads the NCAA and is now the fastest time in program history.
After the second day of competition, the Crimson Tide men sit in third with 39 points, while the UA women sit in fourth with 33 points.
CRIMSON TIDE TOP FINISHES
- In the decathlon, John Landers placed sixth, accumulating 6,725 points, scoring three team points for the Crimson Tide
- Khristian Watson finished fifth in the men's high jump with a 2.09-meter (6-10.25), adding four points to the team total
- Caelyn Harris (fourth | 6.44m | 21-1.50) and Miracle Ailes (eighth | 6.15m | 20-2.25) returned a pair of top-eight finishes in the women's long jump
- Harris scored five points for the Tide
- Ailes added a point to the total
- Carson Burian (second | 8:59.72) and Hudson Hurst (fourth | 9:00.10) finished in the top-four of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase
- Burian claimed silver, adding eight points to the team total
- The Tide's first second-place finish in the event since Antibahs Kosgei in 2017.
