As a reminder, we've got a full slate of events scheduled for this weekend as part of The Integration of Alabama Football: A Celebration of John Mitchell and Wilbur Jackson. In addition to their Friday activities, John and Wilbur will both be recognized at the TIDE PRIDE luncheon before making their way to Bryant-Denny Stadium for a plaque unveiling ceremony at 12:30 p.m. The duo will also be honored on the field at halftime of the football game. Commemorative posters featuring John and Wilbur will be available throughout the perimeter of the stadium.
Alabama No. 12 in Latest LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Standings
In the latest installment of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Standings, which includes fall sports as well as indoor track and field, swimming and diving and basketball, we are ranked 12th in the nation. The final winter standings that will also account for gymnastics, are set to be announced later this month. Proud of the jobs our teams are doing and look to finish out the 2021-22 season strong!
SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Finalists
We are proud to announce that Polly Mack from women's golf and Tyler Sesvold from men's swimming and diving are finalists for the prestigious H. Boyd McWhorter Scholarship, which goes annually to the SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year. A hospitality management major, Polly is enjoying great success in her senior season, including going wire-to-wire to win the Liz Murphey Tournament title. Tyler, a business major, closed his Alabama career in style at last month's NCAA Championships, once again earning All-America honors while leading our men's team to another top-15 national finish. The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners with a $20,000 scholarship, while the 26 remaining male and female finalists will also receive a $10,000 scholarship. Congrats to Polly and Tyler for this honor! We're proud of the way they continue our rich tradition of academic excellence.
Grimes Named SBJ Forty Under 40
Congratulations to our Senior Deputy AD, SWA/Chief Diversity Officer Tiffini Grimes, who was named to Sports Business Journal's 2022 Forty Under 40 list today. This group encompasses the best of the best across all areas of the sports industry. We are so proud of Tiffini and the work she does for Alabama Athletics. We are also incredibly honored to have back-to-back winners of this award as part of our department with Senior Deputy AD, COO J. Batt having been in the 2021 class.
Gymnastics Heads to Fort Worth for the NCAA Championships Semifinals
After another strong showing at the NCAA Seattle Regional Gymnastics Championships where Coach Duckworth's team posted its third 198+ score of the season, the Crimson Tide is heading to the NCAA Championships final site for the 38th time, giving the Crimson Tide, along with Florida, the second most appearances in NCAA history, just two behind Utah. Our ladies will compete in the first of two semifinal sessions on Thursday, April 14 for a chance to earn a spot in the four-team final on Saturday, April 16. If you're in the Fort Worth, Texas area, we hope you'll join us in Dickies Arena to cheer the Tide on.
Baseball Sweeps No. 7 Ole Miss in Oxford
Outstanding job by our baseball team this weekend to sweep seventh-ranked Ole Miss in Oxford with a 7-4 win on Friday, 12-10 victory on Saturday and a 7-3 decision on Sunday. It marked the first sweep against the Rebels since 2014 and first in Oxford since 1997. Coach Bohannon's squad has now won eight of its last nine games, including a season-high six straight.
Softball Secures Another SEC Series
Our softball team improved to 33-5 and claimed another SEC series, winning the first two games against Florida in Gainesville over the weekend. Game three of the series will take place Monday night at 6 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
Swimming and Diving Rolls On
After closing out a strong season in the pool at last month's NCAA Championships, our swimmers and divers have rolled right into some outstanding performances on the national and international stage over the past two weeks. Kensey McMahon was fifth among Americans at the USA Open Water Championships, earning a place on the United States National Team. Rhyan White won the 200-meter backstroke at the recent TYR Pro Series meet in San Antonio, Texas with a time that ranks her third in the world in 2022. Rookie Avery Wiseman took a trio of top-five finishes in the breaststroke events at the Canadian Swimming Trials, including a silver medal in the 50-meter breaststroke, while Tanesha Lucoe took gold off the platform at the Canadian Winter Senior National Championships last weekend.
