Alabama Track and Field Hosts Crimson Tide Invitational This Week

The Crimson Tide will host and compete in the outdoor meet Thursday-Saturday at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium on The University of Alabama campus
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's and women's track and field teams stay put this weekend as they play host to the Crimson Tide Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala. A wide array of programs from neighboring states make up the list of teams competing, with the multi events kicks off competition on Thursday at 12 p.m. CT at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium. The 2021 Crimson Tide Invitational is presented by Beynon Sports.
Schedule of Events
- Thursday opens with the men's and women's multi events starting at 12 p.m. CT with the men's decathlon 100 meters and ending with the men's decathlon 400-meter dash at 4:20 p.m. CT
- The Crimson Tide's Jake Spotswood will be compete in the men's decathlon
- Friday starts at 10 a.m. CT with the men's decathlon 110-meter hurdles
- The Alabama women begin competition Friday at 4 p.m. CT with Taylor Gorum and Samantha Kunza participating in the hammer throw
- Friday wraps up after the men's 5,000 metets, which is set to begin at 9:05 p.m. CT, and features Mateo Barreto, Alex Mielke, Scott Platek and Rich Saenz for the Crimson Tide
- Saturday opens with Nickolette Dunbar and Taylor Gorum competing in the women's discus event at 11 a.m. CT
- Saturday's running events will start after the playing of the National Anthem at 12:55 p.m. CT with the women's and men's 4x100-meter relays
- The Crimson Tide Invitational closes after the men's 4x400-meter relay is run at 6:20 p.m. CT
Scouting the Field
- The No. 1 LSU women, No. 2 LSU men, and the No. 13 Mississippi State men comprise the nationally ranked teams travelling to compete against the Tide this weekend
- The complete list of teams participating in the Crimson Tide Invitational include Alabama, Central Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Indiana State, Kennesaw State, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Memphis, Mississippi State, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Troy, Tulane and UAB (women only)
National Ranks
- The Alabama women are ranked seventh in the nation according to the USTFCCCA National Track and Field Rating Index as of April 5
- Tamara Clark holds the nation's top time in the women's 200 meters (22.50) and the second-best time in the women's 100 meters (11.12) following her performances at the Florida Relays last weekend
- Mercy Chelangat is holding tight to the second-best time of the season in the women's 10,000 meters (32:31.43)
- The Alabama men are ranked 10th in the nation according to the USTFCCCA National Track and Field Rating Index as of April 5
- Robert Dunning holds the second-best time in the nation in 110-meter hurdles (13.45) after his showing at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays and the third-fastest times in the 400-meter hurdles (49.70) after his school-record setting performance at the Florida Relays last weekend
- Eliud Kipsang holds the sixth-fastest time in the nation in the men's 1,500-meter run (3:40.35), while Vincent Kiprop is the seventh-fastest this season in men's 10,000 (28:23.60)
Last Time Out
- Alabama travelled to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Florida Relays last weekend and brought a total of 14 medals back to Tuscaloosa
- The Crimson Tide earned four gold, five silver and five bronze medals during its showing at the University of Florida
- Tamara Clark recorded the fastest time in the nation this season in the women's 200-meter event at the Florida Relays while placing first with a time of 22.50
- Clark also took the silver medal in the women's 100-meter dash (11.12)
- Cherisse Murray threw for 16.41m in the shot put to take first for the Alabama women
- Freshman Eliud Kipsang ran past the competition to win gold in the men's 1,500-meter race with a time of 3:40.35
- Robert Dunning won the men's 110-meter hurdles (13.55) and was second in the men's 400-meter hurdles (49.70)
- Other notable finishes from the Tide include Nickolette Dunbar in the women's shot put (second, 16.29m) and Ryan Lipe from the men's pole vault (No. 2, 5.25m)
Due to health and safety considerations in addition to the current guidelines, fan attendance at the Crimson Tide Invitational is on a first-come, first-served basis until reaching the limited seating capacity. Facial coverings must be worn at all times unless eating or drinking.
