Furr led UA with a sixth-place finish and second top-10 result of the season
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The No. 21 Alabama men's golf team finished play at the 2019 John Hayt Invitational on Monday, closing the two day, 54-hole event in ninth overall with a team total of 902 (294-295-313).
"The reason I love coming here and playing at Sawgrass Country Club is because it's a great identifier to where your golf game is," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "It shows you what things you're doing well but it also exposes areas you need to improve, so for that reason this week was very critical and important to our development as a team as we get ready for the championship season. I felt our guys battled hard. I do think we need to get tougher so we can handle those situations better, but all in all I think this week will help in our development as we get ready for the postseason."
Sophomore Wilson Furr led the Crimson Tide, collecting the second top-10 finish of the season and fifth of his career, as he tied for sixth overall with a 2-over par 218 (70-70-78). The Jackson, Miss. native's opening two rounds of 2-under par 70 were the lowest 18-hole score by any Alabama golfer this tournament. He finished the event with 12 total birdies, which ranked seventh among all individuals, on his way to the best finish this year and second-best tournament result in his collegiate career (placed third overall at the 2018 NCAA Regional).
Junior Josh Sedeno ended the event tied for 29th overall, carding a 226 (73-72-81), on the par 72, 6,976-yard Sawgrass Country Club course. Freshman Frankie Capan III tied for 34th overall with a 228 (77-75-76) to give the Tide three golfers among the top-35 individuals.
Freshman Prescott Butler closed play tied for 49th overall with a 230 (74-78-78), while sophomore Jake DeZoort rounded out the UA golfers in 79th with a 240 (79-80-81).
Tennessee ended Monday's round at 6-over par 294 – 12 strokes better than any squad in the 15-team field, to finish with a team total of 875 to claim the team title. The 43rd ranked Volunteers were 13 shots better than No. 22 Louisville and No. 29 North Carolina, both of which shot an 888 to finish tied for second. Tournament host and No. 17 North Florida tied for fourth overall with No. 30 NC State at 889 to round out the top-five teams.
