Alabama Continues Strong Opening Weekend on Final Day of Commodore Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Seniors Robbie Farnham-Rose and Kyle Felpel captured victories in the 3,000 meters and shot put as the Alabama track & field teams posted 23 top-10 finishes on the final day of competition at Vanderbilt's Commodore Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
"This was a very good opening weekend for us," head coach Dan Waters said following the meet. "We had a number of personal bests and top-10s and saw several freshmen get their first taste of college competition. All in all, this is a good base to build on as we move forward."
The Alabama men turned in 10 top-10 performances on Saturday. The Tide throws crew continued its strong weekend as Alabama finished first, third, fourth and sixth in the men's shot put. Felpel won the event with a mark of 62-1 1/4 (18.93m). Sophomore Kord Ferguson was third at 56-1 3/4 (17.11m). Senior Hayden Reed was fourth at 55-10 1/2 (17.03) and fellow senior Nathan Karr was sixth at 52-11 (16.13m).
Farnham-Rose roared to victory in the 3,000 meters in a personal-best time of 8:03.68 that ranks as the eighth-fastest time in school history. Senior Antibahs Kosgei finished 10th in 8:18.58. Â
Senior Angelo Goss tied for third in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.94. Sophomore Skyler Bowden finished fourth in the 400 meters in a new personal-best time of 47.66. Freshman Michael Wiggins finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 49-6 1/4 (15.09m) in his first outing for the Tide.
In the men's 4x400-meter relay, the Tide "B" relay of sophomore Skyler Bowden, freshman Alize Ford, sophomore Matthew Likely and freshman Noah Karr finished seventh in 3:18.16. The "C" quartet of freshmen Elliott Miller, Oliver Rigg and Patrick Grant and sophomore Josh Short finished 12th in 3:29.03. Alabama's "A" squad was disqualified for an early exchange.
On the women's side, junior Haley Teel got the Tide off to a strong start with a third place finish in the shot put at 51-9 (15.77m) in the morning field events. The effort is the seventh-best indoor mark in Alabama history and the third-best of Teel's career indoors. Senior Lakan Taylor tied for second in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-1 (3.99m).
Freshman Takyera Roberson (7.44) and senior Diamond Gause (7.45) finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 60 meters. Gause's time is a new personal best. In the mile, Alabama grabbed a third of the top 12 spots as senior Hannah Waggoner (4:57.01), junior Caroline Barlow (4:58.56) and freshmen Rebecca Buteau (5:00.91) and Elisabeth Danis (5:02.64) finished seventh, ninth, 10th and 12th, respectively. Waggoner's time is a new personal best. Freshman Amanda Crawford finished 10th in the 400 meters at 55.72 in her collegiate debut. Sophomores Kaitlin York and Nicole Gardner finished ninth and 10th in personal-best times of 9:54.14 and 9:54.55, respectively in the 3,000 meters.Â
In the women's 4x400-meter relay, Alabama's "B" relay team of freshmen Takyera Roberson, Symone Darius and Angela Crawford and sophomore Janel Pate finished fourth in a time of 3:41.29. The "A" relay team of seniors Diamond Gause, Domonique Williams and Brianna Sims and junior Kristyn Williams finished sixth in 3:44.18.
Alabama will return to action next weekend in the Auburn Invitational, which will take place at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

60 Meter Hurdles – Senior Angelo Goss tied for third in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.94. He posted the second-fastest time in the prelims at 8.01 to advance to the finals.
60 Meters – Freshman Alize Ford (6.95) and sophomore Matthew Likely (6.97) finished third in their respective preliminary heats and did not advance to the finals.   Â
400 Meters – Sophomore Skyler Bowden finished fourth in the 400 meters in a new personal-best time of 47.66. Â
800 Meters – Senior Payton Ballard finished 12th in a personal-best time of 1:53.94. Sophomore Josh Short finished 14th in 1:54.85. Â

Mile – Alabama placed four runners in the top 12 in the mile, led by Hannah Waggoner's seventh-place finish in 4:57.01. Junior Caroline Barlow was ninth in 4:59.56. Freshmen Rebecca Buteau (5:00.91) and Elisabeth Danis (5:02.64) finished 10th and 12th, respectively. Waggoner's time is a new personal best.
60 Meter Hurdles – Sophomore Stacey Destin finished second in her heat in a time of 8.77 and did not advance to the finals.
