TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama track and field teams will compete in their second meet of the indoor season at the Auburn Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The meet is scheduled to begin with field events starting at 10 a.m. CT and running events at 10:30 a.m. CT. Teams competing in the meet are Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Ohio State.
Records Fall in Alabama's Season-Opening Meet
Daniel Haugh and Will Herrscher set school records in the men's weight throw and men's pole vault, respectively, as the Alabama men's and women's track & field teams kicked off the 2017 indoor season at Vanderbilt's Commodore Invitational on Jan. 13-14 in Nashville, Tenn. Haugh's NCAA season-leading mark of 73-8 1/4 (22.46m) won the weight throw and established a new school record on his final throw of the competition. In all, three of Haugh's four clean throws surpassed 70 feet and rank among the top four throws in school history. Herrscher also turned in a first place finish in the collegiate pole vault (17-2 3/4; 5.25m) to equal the previous Alabama indoor best, which had stood since 2002. Seniors Robbie Farnham-Rose and Kyle Felpel captured victories in the men's 3,000 meters and men's shot put and junior Filippa Fotopoulou won the women's long jump as the Alabama track & field teams posted 35 top-10 finishes during the two-day meet.
Burks Named to Bowerman Watch List
Alabama senior long jumper Quanesha Burks has earned a spot on the Preseason Women's Bowerman Award Watch List, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Jan. 3. The Bowerman Trophy is collegiate track and field's highest individual honor. The Watch List honor is the third for Burks. She previously appeared in 2015 and 2016.
In the Rankings
The Crimson Tide men are ranked 17th and the women 22nd in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason Indoor National Team Rankings released Jan. 9. The first regular season rankings will be announced Jan. 23.
Head Coach Dan Waters' Outlook
"We got off to a great start last weekend with a pair of school records, and a number of personal bests and top-10 finishes. That's a great base for the team to build on this week against three very strong teams at the Auburn Invitational."
