No. 16 Alabama Owns 11-Shot Advantage on the Field After Day One at Folds of Honor Collegiate

Jack Mitchell, playing in his first collegiate tournament, leads the field with a 7-under par 64
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Sophomore Jack Mitchell carded a 7-under par 64 in the opening round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate Monday to help lead No. 16-ranked Alabama to the overall lead. As a team, the Crimson Tide ended the day at 9-under par 275, 11 shots better than No. 9 Illinois (+2).
Mitchell, who owns the clubhouse lead by three shots ahead of Michigan State's Ashton McCullough, was joined inside the top five by Jonathan Griz and Dominic Clemons after both carded 2-under par rounds. Together, the trio are among just nine golfers in the 75-man field to shoot sub-par rounds on day one.
The Tide will tee of the second round of play at the prestigious Folds of Honor Collegiate, which is being held on the on the par 72, 7,213-yard American Dunes Golf Club course, at 6:33 a.m. CT off hole No. 1.
Round One Highlights
- Jack Mitchell is competing in his first tournament for the Crimson Tide after not seeing any action in 2023-24 and currently holds a three-shot lead on the field
- After opening the front nine with a 1-under par 35, Mitchell blistered his back nine which included four birdies and an eagle along with four pars on his way to a 29
- Dominic Clemons was also seeing his first action for Alabama after transferring last month, and immediately made an impact as he ended the round in third place overall with a round of 2-under par 69
- Junior Jonathan Griz matched Clemons' score with a 2-under par 69, his team-leading 14th career round in the 60s
- Jones Free fought through a triple bogey on the ninth hole of the day but was 1-under across thre rest of his round to finish in a tie for 18th position at 2-over par 73
- Freshman Nick Gross, the third Alabama golfer who saw his first action, rounded out the Tide golfers in a tie for 44th position at 5-over par 76
The Field
- No. 9 Illinois (+2) is in second, 11 shots behind the Tide
- Notre Dame (+3), No. 8 Texas (+3) and tournament host Michigan State (+3) round out the top five teams
- The Folds of Honor Collegiate was created to benefit the non-profit organization, Folds of Honor, that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military members who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
- In addition to the Crimson Tide, other ranked teams in the 15-team field include No. 3 Florida State, No. 8 Texas, No. 9 Illinois, No. 17 Arkansas and No. 22 Ohio State
