CHICAGO – In its toughest road test of the season, the No. 10/15 Alabama men's and women's cross country teams showed out in dominating fashion Friday morning at the 45th annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational. Dismus Lokira claimed the men's crown in his collegiate debut via a 22:41.88 run across the 8k course, while Doris Lemngole (18:48.18) secured her second-straight women's 6k title this season.
Spearheaded by Lokira's first-place finish, Crimson Tide runners Victor Kiprop (22:43.85 | second) and Dennis Kipruto (22:46.34 | third) solidified the 1-2-3 sweep for Alabama, while Brenda Tuwei (19:16.06 | third) and Pheline Mining (19:32.89 | fifth) finished behind Lemngole in the women's race. Friday was the first collegiate cross country race for Tuwei.
The No. 10-ranked Crimson Tide men finished only five points shy of the team title, accumulating 73 points in the Windy City. Following the trio of top three UA finishers was Hudson Hurst (23:45.95 | 28th) and Joel Gardner (23:57.83 | 39th) who rounded out UA's scoring five in the men's 8k. Competing in the Open race, Arthur Graham clocked a third-place finish (24:31.33) as Brady Barton took 11th (25:04.61).
All five scoring runners recorded top-25 times in the women's 6k race, as the No. 15 UA squad rolled to a dominating, 57-point performance to secure the team title. The Tide finished 14 points ahead of the reigning national champion and current No. 1 NC State Wolfpack who took second. Freshmen duo Addison Dorenkamp (20:17.12 | 23rd) and Franziska Drexler (20:20.56 | 25th) rounded out Alabama's scoring five to help claim the women's second team title of the regular season. Running in the Open race, Kate Dickman finished seventh (21:28.47) while Farrah Frith took 31st (22:14.11).
Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"We had a great day against a very strong field that featured the top team in the country on the women's side. We went head-to-head with the reigning women's national champion and came out with the win, while our men finished just a few points shy of taking the team title. I couldn't be prouder of how our lineup raced today. We had several of our athletes finish in the top five, highlighted by Dismus making his collegiate debut with a great run to take the men's crown while Doris won her second title in as many meets. We look forward to closing out the regular season at home later this month."
