The Crimson Tide returns to the water in two weeks for its regular season finale
SARASOTA, Fla. – Alabama rowing concluded its weekend at the Big Ten Invitational, bookending the regatta with eight top-two finishes. The competitive weekend regatta featured six programs that were either ranked or receiving votes in this week's coaches' poll.
Friday featured two sessions worth of racing for the 16 schools in attendance, with the final session being held Saturday morning. Each session would feature races comprised of three 8s and two 4s, with all five crews racing against three other programs.
In the first session, Alabama lined up against conference foe No. 18 Tennessee, (RV) Iowa and Wisconsin. The Crimson Tide would finish second in its first three morning races (Second Varsity Eight+, First Varsity Eight+, Second Varsity Four+) before entering the intermission.
After reconvening at the renowned Nathan Benderson Park, Alabama would log four third-place finishes (2V8+, 1V8+, 1V4+, 3V8+) against its toughest competition all weekend, racing against the likes of No. 11 Ohio State, No. 15 SMU and (RV) Michigan State.
Before closing the regatta, the Crimson Tide would leave its mark on the Sunshine State as all five crews finished first or second in the final session of races on Saturday morning. Alabama's 2V8+, 1V8+ and 2V4+ boats all claimed wins over (RV) UCLA, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
From Head Coach Glenn Putyrae
"We experienced a great weekend of high-level racing and we learned a lot from each race. You learn things on the race course that can't be learned in practice, so each time you can compete against strong competitors, you have the opportunity to get better. The racing is only going to get tougher as we enter the final quarter of our season, so how we apply what we learned here this weekend will help us prepare for our best results at the [Big 12] conference championship [May 14]."
