Congrats to our Grads
This past weekend, more than 90 Crimson Tide student-athletes earned nearly 100 degrees, including four who earned both a bachelor's and master's degree concurrently through the University's Accelerated Masters Program (AMP). Our most recent graduating class is highly decorated and includes a World Champion and Olympic medalist, an NFL All-Pro, NCAA Champions, All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and much more. Our spring graduates took home nearly 70 bachelor's degrees and more than two dozen master's degrees. Congratulations to all our graduates as they embark on the next chapters of their lives.
Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Inducts 2022 Class
What a wonderful celebration Saturday night in Birmingham as we watched Keith Askins and Coach Murphy be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. A well-deserved honor for two incredible men and ambassadors of Alabama. Longtime football practice official Eddie Conyers was also recognized that evening as recipient of the Frank "Pig" House Award, which is given to someone that has performed outstanding service to sports in Alabama and is worthy of special recognition.
SEC Championships on the Horizon
Both our softball and track and field teams are gearing up for SEC Championships this week. Softball is headed to Gainesville as the tourney's No. 2 seed and plays its first game on Thursday after a first-round bye. Track and field is on its way to Oxford, Miss., where our men's and women's squads get things rolling on Thursday, with a half dozen student-athletes seeded No. 1 in the conference in their respective events heading into the weekend. We wish both squads the best of luck and hope you'll join us in cheering them along.
NCAAs Underway for Golf and Tennis
National postseason competition is currently underway for both our golf and tennis teams. Women's golf teed off regional action in Franklin, Tenn. Monday morning, with play concluding on Wednesday. The top four teams will advance to the final site, which is being held in Scottsdale, Ariz. On the men's side, Cannon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder were selected as individual competitors and will compete at the Bryan, Texas Regional May 16-18.
Our women's tennis team advanced as a team to NCAAs and lost in a close one Friday afternoon in Miami to No. 21 UCF. Individually for our tennis teams, SEC Freshman of the Year Filip Planinsek secured a spot in the NCAA Championship Singles Draw on the men's side, while both Loudmilla Bencheikh and Petra Sedlackova are on the alternate list for the women. Singles play will get started on May 23 in Champaign, Ill.
Brad Davis Community Service Leaders of the Year Finalists
The foundation of Alabama Athletics is built not only on academic and athletic excellence, but on service to others as well, which is why we're very proud that Griffin James of gymnastics and Patrick Kaukovalta of men's tennis have been named finalists for the men's and women's Brad Davis Community Service Leader of the Year honor. The accolade is accompanied by the SEC Community Service Postgraduate Scholarship, which is named for former SEC Associate Commissioner Brad Davis, who succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006. The finalists are awarded $5,000 scholarships with the winners being awarded $10,000 scholarships.
University Spotlight
A Happy (belated) Mother's Day to all of our Crimson Tide matriarchs! If you have not already had a chance to read about Aaliyah Locke, mother and now Alabama Law graduate, I encourage you to do so. Wonderful story about resiliency. Congratulations, Aaliyah!
