
Alabama Track Travels to Joe Walker Invitational/Joe May Invitational

The Crimson Tide splits its travel this weekend, sending squads to both Oxford, Miss. and Baton Rouge, La. to compete in a pair of meets
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama track and field rolls into week two of the 2022 outdoor campaign with a twin bill, sending squads to Oxford, Miss., and Baton Rouge, La.
A contingent of jumpers will head to Baton Rouge, La., for the Joe May Invitational (April 9) while a group of throwers will head to Oxford, Miss, for the Joe Walker Invitational (April 8-9). Runners, both distance and sprinters, will split up and head to both sites to compete. Overall, the Crimson Tide will have 70 athletes compete in 32 different events.
Alabama's first meet of the season, the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., was cut short due to inclement weather, making this the Tide's first full weekend of outdoor competition.
The Tide rolls into action Friday at 1 p.m. CT with the women's hammer throw and wraps up with the men's 5,000 meters at 8:20 p.m. CT at the Joe Walker Invitational. Saturday kicks off at 12 p.m. CT at both meets, with the men's pole vault headlining the day at the Joe May Invitational in Baton Rouge and men's discus starting the day in Oxford.
Highlights from Outdoor Week One
- Alabama opened the 2022 outdoor season with a strong showing at the Stanford Invitational and the weather-shortened Florida Relays
- Rookie Victor Kiprop took second in his collegiate outdoor debut, and first among collegians, in the men's 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational
- Kiprop's 28:52.72 in the 10k ranks second all-time at Alabama and third in the nation this season
- Kieran McKeag finished second in the men's hammer throw at the Florida Relays with a career-best toss of 69.71 meters, ranking him third all-time at Alabama
- Alan de Falchi finished second in the men's discus invitational section of the Florida Relays with a throw of 57.94m, which ranks him 10th all-time for the Tide
- Haley Poole took ninth in the women's javelin with a career-best throw of 46.15 meters, ranking her 10th all-time at UA
- Elka Machan finished second in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:33.48
The Crimson Tide in the Top-20
- Following its opening weekend, a trio of Crimson Tide student-athletes are ranked in the top-20 nationally in their respective events
- Victor Kiprop opened is inaugural collegiate indoor season ranked third in the nation in the men's 10,000 meters (28:52.72)
- Senior Kieran McKeag had a career-best throw that ranks him sixth nationally in the men's hammer throw (69.71m)
- Alan de Falchi is 16th nationally in the men's discus (57.94m)
