Alabama climbed to seventh place ahead of the final 18 holes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama women's golf team improved four spots on the 2022 Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championship leaderboard after the second round, recording a 2-over-par 290 at Greystone Golf and Country Club Legacy Course (par 72, 6,331 yards) in Birmingham, Ala., Thursday. The Crimson Tide is in seventh place with just one round to go in the stroke-play phase of the championship.
The Crimson Tide is one of nine teams in the tournament in Golfstat's Top 25 – No. 3 South Carolina, No. 9 Alabama, No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 14 LSU, No. 19 Arkansas, No. 20 Auburn, No. 22 Kentucky, No. 23 Ole Miss, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
All 14 teams will compete in a 54-hole, stroke-play format, which includes 18 holes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Eight teams will advance to the match-play quarterfinals Saturday morning, while four teams will improve to the match-play semifinals Saturday afternoon. The final two teams will go head-to-head in the match-play finals on Easter Sunday.
Defending SEC Champion Auburn is currently leading the field ahead of the final round, recording matching rounds of 288 for an even-par 576 tournament total.
Polly Mack, who is competing in her final SEC Championship, littered her scorecard with birdies Thursday, following up her 7-over-par 79 in the first round with a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. She recorded six birdies on the day, including three of her first four holes to begin her round on the back nine. After improving nine strokes from her first day to her second day, she is tied for 30th place with a 5-over-par 149 tournament total.
Benedetta Moresco also turned in a round under par Thursday, reporting a 1-under-par 71. The sophomore went one under on the back nine, writing down a couple of birdies and a bogey, then followed that up with nine straight pars on the front nine. With that, Moresco entered the top 25, Alabama's lowest placement in the tournament at the moment, tied for 25th place on a 4-over-par 148.
Isabella van der Biest began her round in a consistent fashion, recording a birdie and just one bogey for an even par on the back of the course. She found a few bogeys on the front of the course, along with six pars, to conclude the second round at 3-over-par 75. Playing in her first SEC Championship and just her fifth tournament in the Crimson Tide lineup, van der Biest is tied for 36th place on a 6-over-par 150.
Emilie Øverås is also tied for 36th place on a 6-over-par 150, after the junior recorded a 5-over-par 77 in the second round. Øverås was just one over through her first 14 holes, but found adversity on the last four holes of the front nine.
Angelica Moresco allowed a trio of blemishes to begin the second round with a three over on the back nine. However, a better-than-perfect front nine, which included eight pars and a birdie on her final hole of the day, helped her to a 2-over-par 73 in the second round. She is tied for 42nd place on a 7-over-par 151.
Alabama will tee off hole No. 1 for the final round Friday at 8 a.m. CT paired with Kentucky and Mississippi State.
From Head Coach Mic Potter
"It was a better day today. We got ourselves in a better position, but we have work to do tomorrow, so we need to have a good practice this afternoon, get some dinner and get some rest, and be ready to go in the morning."
