Alabama earned the sixth seed after the final round of stroke play
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama women's golf team improved two more spots on the 2022 Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championship leaderboard after the third round, recording an even par at Greystone Golf and Country Club Legacy Course (par 72, 6,331 yards) in Birmingham, Ala., Friday. The Crimson Tide concluded the stroke-play phase of the championship with a 16-over-par 880 tournament total, earning the sixth seed ahead of match play.
Alabama began the match-play quarterfinal with third-seeded South Carolina Friday evening, but play suspended because of nightfall. The pairing will resume Saturday, pending weather, with tee times to be announced soon.
The Crimson Tide is one of 14 teams in the field that features nine teams in Golfstat's Top 25 – No. 3 South Carolina, No. 9 Alabama, No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 14 LSU, No. 19 Arkansas, No. 20 Auburn, No. 22 Kentucky, No. 23 Ole Miss, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
All 14 teams competed in the 54-hole, stroke-play format, which included 18 holes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Eight teams then advanced to the match-play quarterfinals Friday evening, with four teams improving to the match-play semifinals Saturday. The final two teams will go head-to-head in the match-play finals on Easter Sunday.
Polly Mack led the Crimson Tide in the stroke-play competition after an incredible turnaround.
The senior, who is competing in her final SEC Championship, recorded a 7-over-par 79 in the first round for a share of 58th place. She wouldn't let that keep her team from improving to the match-play competition, so she put together back-to-back team lows over the next two days, including a 2-under-par 70 in the second round and a 3-under-par 69 in the final round.
Her shift allowed her to improve 46 spots up the leaderboard for a share of 12th place on a 2-over-par 218 tournament total.
Not one, but two Alabama players earned a finish inside the top 20, including Benedetta Moresco.
Like Mack, Moresco began the tournament with an unusual round for the sophomore, recording a 5-over-par 77 Wednesday. However, she followed that up with a 1-under-par 71 Thursday and an even-par 72 Friday to tie for 18th place on a 4-over-par 220 final output.
At the conclusion of her final round, she was awarded the 2022 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Angelica Moresco carded her best round of stroke play Friday, shooting even-par 72. She was even par ahead of her final nine holes, then rallied after a double bogey on the par-4 No. 5 with two birdies over the next three holes. Also competing in her final SEC Championship, she finished in a tie for 30th place on a 7-over-par 223 tournament total.
Isabella van der Biest played consistent throughout the three days of stroke play, carding her third straight 75 Friday. The freshman, who entered the Crimson Tide lineup at the start of the spring schedule, carded a 9-over-par 225 for a share of 36th place in her first SEC Championship.
Emilie Øverås totaled a 15-over-par 231 to round out the Crimson Tide's lineup in 55th place in the stroke-play competition.
From Head Coach Mic Potter
"I am proud of the way the girls battled through the final of stroke play to secure the sixth seed in match play. We are in the middle of a very close match with South Carolina so we need to get some rest and be ready to go again in the morning. Congratulations to Benedetta Moresco on being named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year! What a well-deserved honor!"
