BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama softball dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against LSU in the opening series of Southeastern Conference play, falling 13-6 and 5-1.
Game one of the doubleheader was a back-and-forth slugfest, with Alabama (20-2, 0-2 SEC) taking the first lead in the top of the second before LSU (19-6, 2-0 SEC) rallied back to lead 3-1 in the bottom half. The Tide knotted it up at 3-3 in the third but the Tigers again responded with two in the bottom half to lead 5-3. Alabama briefly regained the lead after a three-run fifth but LSU put the game away with eight unanswered runs over the next two innings to hand the Tide its first loss of the season. Game two started in similar fashion, with a solo home run putting Alabama up in the second before a grand slam in the third swung the momentum back to LSU. A solo shot added some insurance for the Tigers in the sixth inning, with the 5-1 score ultimately proving final.
Jenna Johnson had a stellar day at the plate, going a combined 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Five other players earned a hit on the day, including Savannah Woodard's first home run of the season. In the circle, all four pitchers made appearances between the two games, with Jaala Torrence (4-1) and Lexi Kilfoyl (3-1) taking their first losses of the season.
