
No. 26 Alabama Edged By No. 42 Furman on Opening Day of Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

The Crimson Tide dropped the doubles point in its second match of the day to Yale as the two teams will continue play tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. CT
Montgomery, Ala. –– The No. 26 Alabama women's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 42 Furman on Friday in the opening round of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. The loss is the first of the season for the Crimson Tide as the team moves to 9-1 on the year, while the Paladins advanced to 8-4.
Alabama also played the first part of its second-round match against Yale. The Bulldogs captured the doubles point as the two teams will finish the match with singles Saturday at 9:30 a.m. CT at O'Connor Tennis Park.
Due to a rain delay, singles matches were played first during the opening round of competition. If the match score was tied, 3-3, then doubles would be played to decide the match. The second round of competition was split between Friday and Saturday with doubles play taking place Friday night and singles action occurring Saturday.
The Match Against Furman
- Due to a weather delay, singles matches opened the first round of the tournament with doubles matches serving as a tiebreaker in case of a 3-3 singles score
- Alabama jumped out to an early lead in singles with Ola Pitak taking a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Paladins' Ellie Schoppe
- Anne Marie Hiser followed moments later with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jess Dawson to give Alabama a 2-0 advantage in the match
- Furman recorded wins at court six and court four, respectively, to even the score at 2-2
- After splitting the first two sets, Loudmilla Bencheikh battled to take a win on court one going 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 against No. 54 Julia Adams, however Furman would win the last singles match in three sets to force the deciding point to come in doubles play
- Furman would take a win on court one and two, respectively, in doubles to clinch the match
The Opening against Yale
- Yale opened the match with a 6-2 win on court three
- Alabama evened the attempt with Ola Pitak and Kasia Pitak dropping just one game in their 6-1 win over Kathy Wang and Caroline Dunleavy
- The Tide battled on court one but the Bulldogs would clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 victory
