Mercy Chelangat Takes NCAA Outdoor Championship Silver Medal at 10,000 Meters

The Crimson Tide junior ran a 32.22.11 to take second in the 10k and put Alabama on the board in the team competition
EUGENE, Ore. – Alabama junior Mercy Chelangat raced to a silver-medal finish in the 10,000 meters on day one of the women's events at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at the newly renovated Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus this week.
Chelangat posted a time of 32:22.11 to finish second and put the Crimson Tide on the board in the team competition with eight points to sit in 11th place after day one.
Tamara Clark advanced to Saturday's finals in the 100 meters and 200 meters and as part of the 4x100-meter relay along with Daija Lampkin, D'Jai Baker and Natassha McDonald. Amaris Tyynismaa also advanced to Saturday with a strong showing in the 1,500 meters.
Alabama's men move back into the spotlight on Friday with their last day of competition, while the women close out championship week on Saturday.
Moving on to Finals
- Daija Lampkin, Tamara Clark, D'Jai Baker and Natassha McDonald opened competition for the Tide on Thursday by going 43.31 to win their heat of the 4x100m relay and advance to Saturday's final
- Amaris Tyynismaa went 4:09.80 to earn a spot in the final of the 1,500 meters
- Clark ran an 11.16 to sweep into the 100-meter final and a 22.56 to advance to finals in the 200 meters
More Crimson Tide Thursday Finishes
- Alabama closed Thursday's events with a 3:35.99 from Christal Mosley, D'Jai Baker, Sydney Milani and Natassha McDonald in the 4x400-meter relay semifinals, taking 11th overall
- Natassha McDonald ran a 52.13 in the 400 meters semifinals to finish 12th overall
- Leah Hanle posted a 10:15.39 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to take 22nd place overall
- Taylor Gorum posted a throw of 15.85 meters in the shot put final to finish 23rd overall
- Nickolette Dunbar posted a throw of 15.72 meters in the shot put to take 24th overall
