Alabama Finishes Fifth in Stroke Play, Will Meet San Diego State Wednesday in Jackson T. Stephens Cup Finale

The Crimson Tide finished 54 holes of stroke play Tuesday to set the stage for the event’s final day
ROLAND, Ark. – The Alabama men's golf team closed out the stroke play portion of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup Tuesday afternoon, finishing in fifth place overall with a team total of 885 (292-290-303). As a result, the Crimson Tide will take on sixth-place San Diego State in head-to-head match play in Wednesday's finale.
Thomas Ponder led the way for Alabama as he tied for fifth overall – his first career top-five finish – with a 54-hole total of 3-over par 219 (72-73-74) on the par 72, 7,500-yard Alotian Golf Club.
No. 14 Notre Dame (856) ran away with the team stroke play title, finishing 20 shots better than second-place No. 2 Arkansas (876). The Fighting Irish and Razorbacks will play for the overall championship in their matchup Wednesday. Florida State (880) will take on Arizona (880) for third place.
Stroke Play Recap
- Ponder led the Tide for the second time in three stroke-play events this season, also topping UA at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate (T-19th)
- In addition to collecting his first career top-five finish, he now has four top-10 and seven top-20 results, including in all three stroke-place event this fall
- JP Cave carded the round of the day, finishing at 1-over par 73, which included the team's only eagle – and one of just seven overall across the tournament's 54 holes
- Cave closed the event in 23rd place at 7-over 224 (76-76-73)
- Canon Claycomb also picked up a top-20 finish, the sixth of his career and second this season, as he tied for 20th with a 7-over par 223 (73-71-79)
- Dillon West finished in 22nd after carding an 8-over 224 (77-70-77), while Tyler Lipscomb rounded out the Tide in 26th place with a 231 (78-76-80)
Match Play
- Alabama and San Diego State will tee off at 8:30 a.m. CT (9:30 a.m. ET)
- JP Cave, who led the Tide at last week's SEC Match Play event with a 3-1 overall record, will get things started against Steve Sugimoto
- At 8:40 a.m., Tyler Lipscomb begins his match with Jack Townsend
- Thomas Ponder tees off at 8:50 a.m. versus Youssef Guezzale, followed by Dillon West against Shea Lague at 9 a.m.
- Canon Claycomb will anchor the team and will square off against Joey Moore at 9:10 a.m.
Tournament Info
- The Cup is named in memory of the late Augusta National Chairman, Jackson T. Stephens
- The tournament will feature NCAA Division I National Championship-contending men's and women's teams
- The format will be 54 holes of stroke play setting the field for a final day of match play based on the stroke-play team finish and will also recognize a 54-hole stroke play medalist honoree
