
Canon Claycomb Leads the Field After Opening Round of Watersound Invitational

The junior recorded six birdies and only one bogey in Sunday’s opening round
PANAMA CITY, Fla. – Alabama's Canon Claycomb fired a 5-under par 67 in the opening round of the Watersound Invitational Sunday to take the individual clubhouse lead heading into Monday's second round of action. As a team, the Crimson Tide is in 10th overall after carding an 8-over par 296 on day one of the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Claycomb was outstanding on the day, recording six birdies and just one bogey for the lowest opening-round total of his career. The junior leads the stacked 72-man field, which includes 18 of the nation's top 100 golfers, according to Golfstat.com.
The Watersound Invitational is being contested on the par 72, 7,202-yard Shark's Tooth Golf Course in Panama City, Fla. Florida State is serving as host for the event.
The Highlights
- Thomas Ponder joins Claycomb in the top-25, after the Crimson Tide senior carded a 1-over 73 and is in a tie for 21st
- Making his Crimson Tide debut, graduate transfer Charles Nikitas carded a 5-over-par 77 and is in a tie for 54th
- JP Cave is in a tie for 60th at 7-over-par 79, followed by Dillon West (80) who is in a tie for 64th
- Competing as an individual, Simms Abney posted a five-over-par 77 and will enter the second round in a tie for 54th overall

- The Crimson Tide sits five strokes back of fifth place and one stroke back of ninth after its opening round 8-over-par 296
- No. 17 Georgia Tech leads the field after an opening round three-under-par 285
- The Jackets hold a one-stroke lead over No. 4 North Carolina and Virginia Tech who recorded matching opening-round totals of 2-under-par 286
- No. 33 Alabama is one of 12 teams in the 14-team field ranked in the nation's top 50, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 12 Wake Forest, No. 15 Notre Dame, No. 17 Georgia Tech, No. 26 Clemson, No. 32 Louisville, No. 34 NC State, No. 35 Florida State and No. 37 Virginia
