Tide improves to 6-0 in SEC play and captures seventh-straight win behind Petty’s record-breaking night
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men’s basketball team claimed its seventh consecutive victory, and sixth-straight Southeastern Conference win, as it rolled past Arkansas, 90-59, on Saturday afternoon in Coleman Coliseum. With the victory, the Crimson Tide improved to 11-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in league play, which is its best conference start since beginning the 1987 conference season with eight consecutive wins.
The 31-point win was the Crimson Tide’s largest victory in SEC play since defeating Mississippi State 75-43 in Starkville, Miss., on Jan. 16, 2013. It is also the first time since the 2011-12 campaign that Alabama has won seven consecutive games.
Guard John Petty Jr. had a team-leading 17 points on the strength of 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. With his five threes on the night, Petty set the program’s all-time three-point record with 265 career threes surpassing former standout Brian Williams who had 263 threes from 1996-99. Additionally, Petty (1,313 points) became the 28th player in program history to eclipse 1,300 career points.
Guard Jaden Shackelford collected 16 points and drained four threes, while forward Herbert Jones added 13 points in the victory.
Arkansas was led by guard Moses Moody who finished with a game-high 28 points and nine boards in the losing effort.
Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
“It was a big win. We talked about what type of character would we have after the big win at Kentucky. We knew Arkansas was going to bring everything they had. Our guys responded great. We were up on them big early in the game last year and they flipped the script on us and won. We talked about that and wanted to keep guarding like we had been. Our attention to detail on defense was great. I am really happy for Petty who became the programs’ leader in three pointers. He came back for his senior year and he is having a great year. (Joshua) Primo won the Blue Collar Hard Hat Award. He did a lot of small things right even though he did not shoot it well this game. It was great to get some of the younger guys in there. Darius (Miles) shot it great; he’s a lefty like Herb and is versatile. The dunk Keon (Ambrose-Hylton) had, hopefully that will be on Sportscenter. He comes in every day and works hard so I’m really happy for all of our guys."
