
Women's Tennis Picks Up Two Wins to Close Out Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

The Crimson Tide shutout South Alabama, 4-0, before coming up big, 4-3, versus SMU
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis finished the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on a strong note after first blanking South Alabama, 4-0, and then earning a hard-fought, 4-3, win over SMU on Saturday in Montgomery, Ala.
From Coach Mainz
- (On South Alabama) "We showed up ready to play today," stated head coach Jenny Mainz. "We got out to a convincing start this morning against South Alabama and kept the pressure on them. We did a great job finishing matches."
- (On SMU) "I was pleased with the way we finished the day against a tenacious SMU team. We showed a lot of competitive character and gritted our way through some tough matches. Luca Fabian displayed a lot of poise and her experience was a big factor."
Doubles (vs. South Ala. – Fri.)
- Doubles play started off on the right foot with freshman Sasha Gorchanyuk and senior Alba Cortina Pou blanking Fujioka/Kohoutova, 6-0. After a Jags win on court three, junior Moka Ito and freshman Isabella Harvison clinched the point with their 6-4 victory over Pasanen/Takanishi on court one.
Singles (vs. South Ala.)
- Freshman Ares Teixido made it 2-0 after her straight set 6-3, 6-2 victory over Yurie Takanishi. Another Alabama freshman pushed the lead to 3-0 after Harvison downed Cami Moreno, 6-1, 7-5. To close out the match, Ito battled to a three-set victory over Yu Fujioka, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Doubles (vs. SMU)
- The Tide cruised through doubles play after Cortina Pou/Gorchanyuk defeated Petchey/Bartolome, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, followed by Ito/Harvison coming away with the 6-4 win on court one to give UA the 1-0 edge to start.
Singles (vs. SMU)
- Alabama quickly jumped out to a 3-0 with two wins from its season leaders. Cortina Pou moved to an unheard of 11-0 in singles play with another straight set win over Sarai Yesaki, 6-4, 6-0. Shortly after, Harvison eased past Isabella Zade, 6-4, 6-2.
- The Mustangs responded by taking the next three matches on courts one, four and six, to tie things at 3-3. The match came down to senior Luca Fabian and Nicole Petchey on court five. Each individual won a 6-4 set, before Fabian ran away with it in the third, coming through with the 6-1 win to clinch the match at 4-3.
