Freshman Ares Teixido clinched the match on court four

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In its first road test of the season, Alabama shined in its 5-2 victory over San Diego State on Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. With the win the Crimson Tide improves to a perfect 5-0 record, while the Aztecs (2-1) suffer their first loss of 2020.

"I thought we competed hard today," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "These matches are great opportunities for our team to get outdoors and see teams we never play. SDSU was a good road test for us. We found a way to pull out some close matches in doubles and singles. Moka (Ito) and Isabella (Harvison) fought off a match-point in doubles and gritted out an 8-6 tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot. We're playing better doubles, but we still need to play more aggressively."

Doubles

The Tide picked up an early doubles victory from senior Alba Cortina Pou and freshman Sasha Gorchanyuk after the pair won 6-2 against Jordan/Arnold. Alabama clinched the doubles point when senior Ann Selim and freshman Ares Teixido earned the 6-4 win over Smith/Mulbarger. After the point was clinched, court one played out with No. 51 freshman Isabella Harvison and junior Moka Ito battled to the 7-6(6) victory versus Nadozie/Melosch.

Singles

Selim continued her momentum from doubles into singles with her 6-2, 6-0, win to give Alabama the 2-0 advantage. Following a loss on court two, Ito cruised to the 6-4, 6-0, victory to make it 3-1. It was Teixido who secured the match for the Tide when she defeated Cecile Morin, 7-5, 6-3.
After the match was clinched, Cortina Pou won her third set tiebreaker 10-2 to push the score to 5-1. San Diego State concluded the match with a victory on court five to make it a 5-2 final.

Up Next

The Crimson Tide will play a neutral site match on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. against CSUN at the Aztec Tennis Center.
