Junior Alba Cortina Pou took down No. 113 Alannah Griffin to clinch the Crimson Tide victory
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team fought and earned a 4-2 victory over No. 47 Auburn in front of a great crowd Friday night at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With its second-consecutive Southeastern Conference win the Crimson Tide moves to 14-7 overall and 3-4 in league play, while the Tigers drop to 13-9 on the year and 0-7 in SEC action.
"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "We have shown so much resiliency and mental toughness and tenacity and we did it again tonight. It helped a lot that we got the doubles point and got some momentum going into singles. In singles we won five first sets and Auburn kept fighting and that's how it is in the SEC."
The Tide started the match with a strong showing in doubles action. Following a loss on court two, Alabama dominated with juniors Ann Selim and Kimberley Gintrand winning 6-3 at the No. 3 spot and senior Andie Daniell and sophomore Moka Ito clinching the doubles point 6-4 on court one.
The Crimson Tide continued its momentum into singles with junior Luca Fabian doubling the UA advantage after defeating Yu Chen, 6-1, 6-4, on court five. After an Auburn win on court two, seconds later Selim made it 3-1 when she bested Caroline Turner, 6-3, 6-1.
The Tigers answered with a three-set victory on court three to trim the deficit to 3-2. On court four, junior Alba Cortina Pou trailed 2-1 in the third set before rattling off five-straight games to secure the 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, win and clinch the 4-2 victory. Cortina Pou's win over No. 113 Alannah Griffin was her first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season.
Next up, the Crimson Tide will be back home for three more matches beginning with No. 2 Georgia on Friday, March 29 at 5 p.m. The match will be the Tide's Power of Pink match and will be streamed live via RollTide.com.
