Alabama fell to No. 5 Vandy, 4-0, before defeating Alcorn State, 5-0
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama fell to No. 5 Vanderbilt, 4-0, before bouncing back with a 5-0 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With today's results, the Crimson Tide moves to 12-6 overall and 1-3 in Southeastern Conference play.
"We played a very good Vanderbilt team this morning," head coach Jenny Mainz stated. "They are very disciplined and we did not play well in doubles at all. After doubles I told the team that this match could either way and I liked out response, I think the team fought very hard. We had a lot of opportunities and fought tooth and nail to the bitter end, but the lesson is that we have to get a better start and have more intensity. I think this team is getting a lot better and even though we lost 4-0 the score was not indicative of the matches and the scores within each respective court."
In the first match of the day, the Commodores won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 edge. In singles play, the Tide hung tough in the first sets before Vanderbilt eventually prevailed on courts three, one and four to clinch the 4-0 victory.
Alabama dominated in the second match of the afternoon, beginning with doubles wins from juniors Alba Cortina Pou and Luca Fabian, along with juniors Kimberley Gintrand and Ann Selim to give the Tide the 1-0 advantage.
In singles, UA cruised to victory after picking up victories from Cortina Pou on court three, Fabian on court four and sophomore Moka Ito on court two. After the match was clinched at 4-0, senior No. 66 Andie Daniell finished her match on court one to make the final score, 5-0.
Next up, the Tide will be back on the road on Friday, March 15 at 3 p.m. CT for a matchup with Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.
