No. 4 Alabama Men’s Golf Opens 2019 Spring Campaign in Puerto Rico

Crimson Tide set to begin play on Sunday morning
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's golf team will open the 2019 spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 17-19. The event, which is hosted by Purdue University, will be played in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on the par 72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
This year will mark the Crimson Tide's 15th consecutive year competing in the event, having won six team titles (2008, 2011-14, 2016). Additionally, an Alabama golfer has brought home six individual titles, including Matthew Swan in 2008, Justin Thomas in 2012, Robby Shelton in 2014 and 2016, Dru Love in 2015 and Lee Hodges a year ago.
Alabama starts the spring season ranked No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and will be facing six others in the top 50 including, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 11 Clemson, No. 13 Georgia, No. 26 N.C. State and No. 35 Marquette. The rest of the field is comprised of tournament host Purdue, Iowa, Ohio State, UNC Greensboro, Maryland, East Carolina, Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee.
The Tide ended the fall season 44-12-0 and finished all four tournaments in the top five, including a tournament championship at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in October. Sophomore Davis Shore leads Alabama going into the spring season with a 71.01 average.
Sophomore Wilson Furr is also coming off a solid fall season with a 72.31 average and an appearance in the PGA Tour's Sanderson Farms Championship which he qualified for after winning the Mississippi State Amateur this past June.
Shore and Furr will be joined in the Alabama lineup by senior Alex Green along with a pair of freshmen Frankie Capan III and Prescott Butler this week.
Alabama will begin play at the three day, 54-hole event on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET (7 a.m. CT). Live scoring throughout the week can be found at www.golfstat.com
