Despite a tough battle, the Tide could not secure the win
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama soccer team fell just short in a 3-2 loss over Auburn at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. This match marked the fifth conference game this season that has extended past regulation.
In the first half, the Auburn Tigers were the first to get on the board with a goal by Hailey Whitaker in the 31st minute. The Crimson Tide fired off ten shots and earned four corner kicks entering the break.
Freshman Carlee Giammona opened the second half with her third goal of the season in the 58th minute, assisted by Casey Wertz to tie it up. Auburn shortly responded with a goal by Rocio Sanders in the 61st minute to regain the lead. Freshman Carly Wyatt notched the equalizer just seven minutes later, assisted by Nealy Martin and Giammona.
In the final minutes of the second overtime period, Auburn's Sydney Richards scored the game-winner to break the stalemate.
From Head Coach Wes Hart
- "I don't get too wrapped up in Auburn vs. Alabama. We're trying to win regardless of who we're playing, so it's not disappointing to me because it's Auburn. It's disappointing to me because we let three points slip away."
- "Possession at the end of the day doesn't matter. You've got to finish your chances. Credit to Auburn – they didn't have many – but they put them on goal, which gave themselves a chance. We missed the target too many times, and we didn't make a save or make a play, but they did."
Behind the Box Score
- Despite the outcome, Alabama outshot the Tigers 29-10 with 12 on frame. Junior Casey Wertz led the team with seven shots, followed by freshman Reyna Reyes with six.
- The Tide earned eleven corner kicks throughout the match and prevented Auburn from earning any.
- This is the second consecutive game that Carlee Giammona has scored a goal, bringing her weekly total to five points (1g vs. Missouri, 10/24).
- Freshman goalkeeper AJ Crooks collected four saves.
