Men's and Women's Golf Teams Both Finish as National Runner-Ups
We are so proud of our men's and women's golf teams for advancing to their respective national title matches over the last week. In case you haven't heard, Alabama became the first school to have both programs in the finals since the women adopted the current format in 2015. Also, our men made their fourth appearance in the final match in the last seven years, giving them the most finals appearances of any school since they moved to the current format in 2009. Congratulations to both teams on great seasons!
Track & Field Earns 23 Qualifying Spots in NCAA Championships
Our men's and women's track & field teams had several strong showings at the NCAA East Preliminary last week in Tampa to earn 23 qualifying spots in the NCAA championships. Action begins in Eugene at Oregon's Hayward Field on Wednesday, June 6 and will run through Saturday, June 9. Best of luck to all of student-athletes and staff as we look to add some more championship hardware in Tuscaloosa!
Mazen Osama Makes Historic Run at NCAA Men's Tennis Championships
Our men's tennis team not only made a historic run as a team, advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time since 2007, but junior Mazen Osama also made singles history as he became the first Crimson Tide student-athlete on the men's side to advance to the quarterfinals of the individual draw. In addition, he was selected as the National Player to Watch by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, which is another first for the program.
Softball Advances to NCAA Super Regional for an NCAA-Record 14 Straight Years
Our softball team made its 14th-straight appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals last weekend, which is an NCAA record for consecutive trips to the Supers. It also claimed its 16th regional title in the program's 22-year history after having swept through its three games in Tuscaloosa. Proud of the way #Team22 represented Alabama!
Football Non-Conference Single-Game Tickets on Sale Friday
Due to some of our visiting non-conference teams not using their entire allotments, we will have a limited number of single-game tickets on sale Friday beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Tickets start at $40 for the matchups with Arkansas State and The Citadel, while seats for the game against Louisiana are set at $55. We also have partial plan options available in four-game and six-game packages and single-game tickets to the opener in Orlando against Louisville.
More Postgraduate Scholarships
Swimmer Luke Kaliszak and gymnast Mackenzie Brannan, who both graduated in May, earned NCAA Winter Postgraduate Scholarships. This is the second postgraduate scholarship for both, since they earned Southeastern Postgraduate Scholarships in the spring and were finalists for the 2018 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. With two scholarships already this season, Alabama student-athletes have now earned at least one NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship the last 17 years in a row. Overall, our scholar-athletes have earned 64 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships since football's Steve Davis earned the first in 1968. We're very proud of Luke and Mackenzie and can't wait to see what the future holds for them.
More on the CoSIDA Academic All-District List
Three members of our track and field program earned a place on the CoSIDA Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-District IV Team, which was announced this week. Junior Nicole Gardner earned the women's honor, while junior Connor Ferrentino and senior Josh Short earned the men's honor. Nicole, Connor and Josh now move on to the national Academic All-America ballot. With these three latest honors, Alabama has had 17 student-athletes across 10 different sports earn a place on the district list, proving once again that Alabama thrives both academically and athletically.
Crimson Tide Scholarship Fund
Did you know the athletics department has over 600 student-athletes in 21 sports and funds over $19 million in scholarships each year? While some of the scholarship cost is funded through other revenue sources, private funding of scholarships is necessary to provide our student-athletes with the best opportunities for learning and personal growth at The University of Alabama. Your gift to the Crimson Tide Scholarship Fund (CTSF) helps provide the margin of excellence required to maintain and build upon the standard set by Alabama Athletics. Visit www.crimsontidefoundation.org to make your gift supporting the scholarship needs of our outstanding student-athletes. Remember, every gift matters!
University Spotlight
Congratulations to our robotics team for earning the top spot for the fourth year in a row at the NASA Robotic Mining Competition. This year's challenge was to build a robot capable of navigating and excavating simulated Martian soil, and they passed the challenge with flying colors, besting fellow students from over 50 other institutions. Way to go!
#RollTideFriday
Since we are in Destin this week for SEC meetings, I decided to go with some water-themed choices for our #RollTideFriday features. First, we have a photo from our friend Ashley showing us that she brought her Alabama gear all the way to the Dominican Republic, and secondly, we have Big Al on a recent visit to New Zealand.
Ashley in the Dominican Republic
Big Al in New Zealand
Remember to use the hashtag #RollTideFriday in your social posts and tweet your photos to me at @Greg_Byrne. We will select two photos to feature in each blog and add even more to our #RollTideFriday Fan Hub.
