
Alabama Track and Field Places Three on CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team

Junior Nicole Gardner earned the honor from the women’s team, while juniors Connor Ferrentino and Josh Short earned it for the men
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A trio of Alabama track and field student-athletes were voted to the CoSIDA Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-District IV teams it was announced this week.
Junior Nicole Gardner earned the honor on the women's side of the slate, while juniors Connor Ferrentino and Josh Short earned the men's honor. All three now move on to the national Academic All-America ballot.
With this year's honors, the Crimson Tide track and field program has now put at least one student-athlete on the district team nine years in a row.
Gardner is a double major in biology and psychology with a 3.97 grade point average. She finished eighth in the 1,500 meters at the SEC Outdoor Championships and recorded a personal best in the event at the Crimson Classic with a time of 4:24.19. She finished as Alabama's No. 1 runner at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country South Regional in Tuscaloosa with a time of 21:04.50 over the 6K course.
An accounting major with a 3.98 GPA, Ferrentino finished 14th in the 1,500 meters at the 2018 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 3:53.46 and was a member of the Tide's 4x400-meter relay that ran at the conference indoor championships. He recorded a personal best of 3:47.48 to win his section of the 1,500 meters at Stanford's Cardinal Classic this season.
Short, who carries a 4.00 GPA as a political science major, is also minoring in philosophy at Alabama. He finished 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the SEC Outdoor Championships this season with a season-best time of 9:21.72. He captained the 2017 UA cross country squad that made its first team appearance at the NCAA Championships since 2010.
In addition to the three UA runners on the track and field/cross country teams, the Tide has had 14 from other sports earn All-District honors during the current academic year including eight on the at-large teams as well as two each from football and softball and one each from volleyball and soccer, for a total of 17 overall.
