TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Shelby Gibson, a 6-3 center from Murfreesboro, Tenn., has joined the Crimson Tide women's basketball team, Alabama head coach Kristy Curry announced on Thursday. Gibson, who spent her first two seasons at Ole Miss, must sit out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
"We are thrilled to welcome Shelby and her family to Alabama," said Curry. "Instantly, you can see that she is a great teammate and will bring seasoned leadership to our program. Shelby is a proven scorer in the SEC and will be a great fit in our system."
Gibson, a two-time Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week in 2016-17, scored double-digit points 19 times over the past two seasons, including 20 or more points on three occasions in 2017-18. In addition to her inside game, she can also step out and shoot from long range, having hit over 37 percent (25-67) for her career. Overall, Gibson has connected on 50 percent of her shot attempts, making 147 of 296.
Gibson started in 22 games for the Rebels and played in a total of 62, while averaging over 15 minutes per contest. She scored a career-best 21 points at Arkansas to start the 2018 SEC season where she went 9-of-13 from the field. Later in the season, Gibson notched her first career double-double as she went for 15 points and 10 rebounds at LSU. Other career bests include three assists (vs. Lipscomb on Nov. 13, 2016), three steals (twice) and two blocks (at Arkansas on Dec. 31, 2017).
Coming out of high school, Gibson was ranked ninth nationally at her position and in the top 60 overall. She was a four-year starter for Oakland High School where she earned Class AAA All-State honors. Gibson also played AAU with the Tennessee Flight, Tennessee Pride and Kentucky Premier programs.
