The Crimson Tide improves to 9-0, which is the best start since 2009
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team continues to roll after defeating Chattanooga, 6-1, and shutting out Alabama A&M, 7-0, Saturday night at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide defended its unblemished record, improving to 9-0 on the season.
"I am pleased with today's performance and we are working in the right direction," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "I think we are getting better in doubles play. We mixed up our doubles pairings in the second match to keep it fresh, and to give a renewed enthusiasm with doubles, while still running their plays. I feel like we are getting better. I think we could still be more aggressive on the baseline and use our first serve to set up points better, but that being said, I am pleased with today."
Alabama shut out its sixth opponent of the year on Saturday to continue its hottest start since 2009.
Junior Andie Daniell continues to dominate the field, defeating her 11th straight singles opponent since fall, while remaining undefeated in doubles play with sophomore Ann Selim since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, 8-0.
In the morning match against the Mocs (2-1), the Crimson Tide shot out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches. Daniell and Selim started things off at No. 1, topping Caswell/Van Hee, 6-3. For the doubles point, senior Smith Hinton and sophomore Jacqueline Pelletier downed Hall/Chalaganidze, 6-2, while sophomores Alba Cortina-Pou and Luca Fabian ended doubles play by defeating Edwards/Zaporozhets, 6-4.
In singles, Selim cruised past Bogdana Zaporozhets, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 while No. 106 Daniell took care of Samantha Caswell, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 to give Alabama the 3-0 advantage. Then on court two, Hinton snatched match point by defeating Delaney Edwards, 6-4, 6-3, to seal the deal.
Rounding out singles play for the Tide was sophomore Luca Fabian, Cortina-Pou and freshman Kylie Moulin who went 2-1. Fabian took down Caroline Hall, 6-4, 7-6(4), while Cortina-Pou slipped to Emma Van Hee, 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-7.
At No. 6, Moulin wrapped up singles action in convincing fashion, downing Tamir Chalaganidze in three sets. After dropping set one, 6-3, and falling, 4-1, in set two, the Lithia, Fla., native rallied back into the match to take set two, 7-6(3), and complimented the comeback by winning the tiebreaker, 10-4.
In the night cap, the Crimson Tide dominated doubles play, capturing all three matches for the 1-0 lead over Alabama A&M (0-1). Fabian and Selim defeated Hollos/Khalid, 6-1, at No. 1, Moulin and Daniell cruised past Gutierrez Cerezo/Smith, 6-1, at No. 2, while Hinton and sophomore Kimberley Gintrand rolled past, Kawai Rengiil/Mashego, 6-0, at No. 3.
In singles, Alabama snagged all six singles matches to shut out the Bulldogs, 7-0. Daniell, Hinton and Gintrand did not give up a set, blanking their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, on courts one, two and six respectively. At No. 5, Pelletier took care of Ayana Kawai Rengiil, 6-1, 6-1, while Moulin toppled Shrarre Smith, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4.
Rounding out singles play was Selim who handled Rida Khalid, 6-0, 6-1, on court three.
Up next, Alabama will embark on a three-match road swing in Seattle, Wash. The Crimson Tide will face Washington on Friday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. CT, and will follow with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 10 against Portland and Eastern Washington University.
