The Crimson Tide suffers its first loss of the season on the road
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Alabama women's tennis team fell in a hard-fought match against No. 24 Washington, 6-1, on Friday night at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Crimson Tide (9-1) suffered its first loss of the season while the Huskies (5-2) win their third match in a row.
"Today was a great learning experience for us," coach Jenny Mainz said. "We had some chances but did not capitalize. We knew it was going to be a tough road test. Washington is a quality team and played a good match from start to finish. We'll get better. We have to keep working, keep improving and keep believing. We're looking forward to our opportunities tomorrow. Great day to get better."
In doubles play, senior Smith Hinton and Jacqueline Pelletier finished first, taking care of business on court three, 6-2, over Fung/Prokopuik, but the Dawgs bounced back and won the final pair of doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead. Washington's tandem of Hance/Kopcalic defeated sophomores Alba Cortina-Pou and Luca Fabian, 6-2, on court two, while junior Andie Daniell and sophomore Ann Selim fell to their first doubles pairing of the year, 3-6, on court one.
In singles, No. 36 Vanessa Wong topped Hinton, 6-0, 6-1, and moments later, UW's Miki Kobayashi defeated Fabian, 6-0, 6-1, to extend the Huskies' lead to 3-0.
Then on court five, Selim put the Tide on the board, cutting the Dawgs' lead to 3-1 after handling Kenadi Hance, 6-1, 6-2. However, UW came out on top on court four, as Alexis Prokopuik edged freshman Kylie Moulin, 6-4, 7-6 (2), to clinch the match.
At No. 6, UW's Katarina Kopcalic defeated Pelletier, 6-5, 6-4, while the two squads rounded out play on court one with a top-100 matchup. No. 89 Daniell took the early advantage over No. 11 Stacey Fung, 7-5, in set one, but Fung rallied back in set two, 6-4, and won the third-set tiebreaker, 10-6, to give UW the 6-1 victory.
Up next, Alabama will remain in Seattle for a Saturday doubleheader against Portland at noon CT and Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. CT at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
