Sophomore John Petty Jr. led Alabama scoring with 12 points and added seven rebounds
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's basketball program won its exhibition game against Montevallo, 82-40, on Tuesday night in Coleman Coliseum. Sophomore John Petty Jr. led the charge for the Tide as five players scored double-digit points.
"It was a great all-around game for us tonight," Alabama head coach Avery Johnson said. "Obviously, we were the bigger, stronger, faster team but Montevallo is a well-coached team and they do some really nice things on offense. I'm proud of our guys and we did a lot of good things on offense and defense. We had quality possessions and didn't have as many wasted possessions as we have had here recently in practice. We did a better job of taking care of the ball. Overall, this game was really about us. It was about us performing and trying to execute what we want on both ends of the floor and trying to figure out some sort of idea. We look like a more balanced team and we will see what the next step is and how we come back in practice."
Petty finished with a team-high 12 points and was joined by sophomore's Alex Reese and Galin Smith who each scored 11, along with junior Tevin Mack who put up 10. Freshman Kira Lewis Jr. had a solid performance putting in 10 points off the bench. Senior Donta Hall also had a solid game with eight points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
The Crimson Tide dominated on defense holding Montevallo to only 26 percent from the floor and 20 percent from three.
The Tide played without Riley Norris, Daniel Giddens and Javian Davis-Fleming who were all sidelined for Tuesday's contest.
The Crimson Tide defense was stifling, as Alabama held the Falcons to a 6-for-28 shooting mark in the first half. Alabama also used a 10-0 run to build the halftime lead, 39-22.
After the break Alabama got off to a scorching start, outscoring Montevallo 20-6 to lead 59-30 after the second media timeout. From that point on Alabama tore off another impressive run and led by as many as 48 points before settling for the 42-point win.
The exhibition victory preps Alabama for its regular-season opener against Southern on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. on SECN+.
