Alabama Track & Field to Wrap Up Regular Season at SEC Relays

Crimson Tide one of nine conference schools to compete at LSU this weekend
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's and women's track & field teams will compete in the SEC Relays, April 28-29 at LSU's Bernie Moore Track & Field Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Other schools scheduled to compete include Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. This weekend's meet is the final scheduled regular season meet for the Crimson Tide prior to the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Alabama Men No. 5, Women up to No. 10 in Latest USTFCCCA Outdoor Rankings
The Alabama men's track and field team is ranked No. 5 this week while the women jumped 10 spots to No. 10 in the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Rankings, released April 24. The men's team posted 204.45 points while the women's team earned 135.07 points. Regionally, the men are ranked No. 1 in the South region for the third-straight week, while the women remain No. 3 for the second week in a row.
Burks Named SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Alabama long jumper Quanesha Burks was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. Burks won her second long jump competition in as many outings this season at the War Eagle Invitational on Saturday with a leap of 22-0 ¾ (6.72m). The mark currently leads the nation and is the sixth-longest in school history. Burks was also the top collegiate finisher in the women's 100 meters on Saturday in a time of 11.18. The time is tied for ninth-fastest nationally and is ranks No. 6 all-time at Alabama.
Head Coach Dan Waters' Outlook
"The SEC Relays will be a good test for us," head coach Dan Waters said. "With eight other SEC teams at the meet, we'll get a chance to see where we are heading into the conference championship in a couple of weeks. We've had a pretty good spring and are starting to hit our stride as we enter the championship portion of our schedule."
Last Week: War Eagle Invitational
In addition to Burks' effort, Alabama had several other top performers at the War Eagle Invitational. Vanessa Clerveaux was the first collegiate finisher in the women's 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.36, and sophomore Stacey Destin posted the top collegiate clearance in the women's high jump with a personal-best mark of 6-0 (1.83m). Destin's mark equals the eighth-best leap in Alabama history.
For the men, junior Alfred Chelanga finished second in the men's invitational 5,000 meters in 13:53:07, the sixth-fastest time in school history. Junior Ruebin Walters won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.53 in his outdoor season debut.

The Crimson Tide will travel to Columbia, S.C. for the 2017 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 11-13 at the University of South Carolina's Cregger Track.
