Nineteen Alabama Student-Athletes Earn All-America Honors at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

Burks, Destin, Gholston, Gayle and Richards earn double first-team honors
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Nineteen Alabama track & field student-athletes collected All-America honors in 16 events at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships March 10-11 in College Station, Texas.
Four men earned individual first-team honors, including Alfred Chelanga (fifth/5,000 meters), Steven Gayle (fourth/400 meters), Jereem Richards (second/200 meters) and Ruebin Walters (fifth/60-meter hurdles). Gayle, Richards, Skyler Bowden and Jacopo Lahbi also earned first-team recognition with an eighth place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
Second-team awards went to Daniel Haugh (ninth/weight throw), Elias Hakansson (13th/weight throw), Kyle Felpel (ninth/shot put) and Angelo Goss (11th/60-meter hurdles).
Four women were also recognized as first-team All-Americans, including pole vault national champion Lakan Taylor, double first-team honorees Quanesha Burks (second/long jump, seventh/60-meters) and Stacey Destin (fourth/high jump, sixth/pentathlon) and Alex Gholston (fifth/400 meters). Gholston, Takyera Roberson, Diamond Gause and Domonique Williams were also honored as first-team All-Americans after a fourth place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
Vanessa Clerveaux (ninth/60-meter hurdles) and Haley Teel (16th/shot put) were recognized as second-team All-Americans for the women.
Destin and Burks are the first double individual event All-Americans for the Alabama women since Pauline Davis (55 meters, 200 meters) in 1989. Davis was also a double honoree in the same events in 1988.
The 19 honorees and 16 events are both all-time highs for Alabama at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Alabama will open the 2017 outdoor track & field season March 17-18 at the Mississippi State Relays in Starkville, Miss.
