BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jereem Richards raced to a national-leading time in men's 200 meters and Stacey Destin posted a national mark in the women's high jump to lead the Alabama track & field teams to victories at the Auburn Invitational on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The 17th-ranked Alabama men scored 127.4 points on the day to outdistance second place Auburn (112). No. 3 LSU (104.5) and No. 21 Ohio State (82) rounded out the scoring.
The women's team chase went down to the final event of the day, as the Tide clinched the crown with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in a time (3:36.54) that is the second-best in school history. The 22nd-ranked Alabama women finished with 150 points. No. 7 LSU was second with 145. Ohio State (101) and Auburn (89) finished third and fourth.
"Today was a good day," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said following the meet. "We've improved each week and have had a national best set in both meets we've entered. I'm very pleased with where we are at the moment. We're going to enjoy the wins and then get ready for Clemson next weekend."
Richards, who was running in his first individual event for the Crimson Tide after transferring to Alabama last year, blazed to a time of 20.57 to easily outdistance the field in the 200 meters. In addition to topping the nation in the event, and all but securing a spot in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in March, his time is also the second-fastest in school history behind the 20.32 run by Diondre Batson on March 14, 2014.
Richards' national-leading mark is the second in as many weeks for the Tide. Junior Daniel Haugh posted the top men's weight throw mark in the country a week ago at the Commodore Invitational.
Destin's clearance at 6-0 (1.83m) in the women's high jump is a new personal best for the sophomore and is currently tied for eighth-best nationally. The event capped off a busy day as she also finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best 8.64 and finished fourth in the shot put at 36-1 1/2 (11.01m) in her first ever attempt in that event.
In other men's events, Robbie Farnham-Rose won the mile for the Tide in 4:05.06. The senior has won both events he has entered this season. He captured the 3,000 meters at the Commodore Invitational a week ago. Junior Conner Thompson won the 5,000 meters in a personal-best time of 14:30.5. Alabama also finished 1-2-3-4 in the men's shot put on Saturday as senior Kyle Felpel won the event for the second week in a row with a mark of 59-10 1/4 (18.24m).
In addition to Destin's performance, the Tide women recorded first place finishes in 5,000 meters by sophomore Kaitlin York (17:18.73) and the pole vault by senior Lakan Taylor (13-3 1/2; 4.05m). York's time is a new personal best.
Alabama will travel to Clemson, S.C. next weekend for the Bob Pollack Invitational, Jan. 27-28. Â
