Alabama Women’s Tennis Rolls Past Illinois, 6-1, Friday Night

Crimson Tide collected two doubles wins and five singles victories
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team won a 6-1 decision over Illinois on Friday night at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to an overall 3-0 record.
In doubles play, senior Danielle Spielmann and sophomore Andie Daniell topped Madie Baillon and Jaclyn Switkes in a 6-2 decision on court two to tally the Tide's first doubles win. Senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff clinched the doubles point for Alabama from the No. 1 position, as the pair defeated Illinois' No. 32-ranked doubles team in Louise Kwong and Ines Vias, 6-2, to give the Tide a 1-0 match lead going into singles play.
Alabama's No. 86-ranked singles player in Routliffe (No. 1) collected the first singles win in straight sets against Louise Kwong, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Tide a 2-0 match lead. Illinois' Madie Baillon responded by defeating junior Smith Hinton (No. 4) in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-0, to cut the Alabama match advantage to 2-1. Spielmann (No. 3) went on dominate Jaclyn Switkes in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-1, before the Pothoff (No. 4) clinched the Alabama match victory against Ines Vias in a match that was decided in three sets, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1. The Tide continued to roll, as Alabama's No. 109-ranked singles player in Daniell (No. 2) topped Alexis Casati in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4). Freshman Juliana Valero (No. 6) registered Alabama's final singles win of the contest, as she outlasted Daniela Novak in a three set thriller, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
