Alabama Women’s Tennis Falls Short to Washington, 4-3

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team fell short in a match that went the distance, 4-3, to Washington on Saturday afternoon at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to an overall 3-1 record, while the Huskies remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Freshman Juliana Valero and junior Smith Hinton collected Alabama's first doubles win of the contest, as the duo topped Katarina Kopcalic and Kenadi Hance in a 6-2 decision on court three. Alabama held a 5-4 advantage on courts one and two, before senior Danielle Spielmann and sophomore Andie Daniell clinched the doubles point in a 6-4 decision over Stacey Fung and Alexis Prokopuik, giving the Tide a 1-0 match lead going into singles play.
In singles play, Daniell (No. 2) registered the team's first win in straight sets against Nour Abbes, 6-1, 6-0, to extend Alabama's match lead to 2-0. The Tide's No. 86-ranked singles player in senior Erin Routliffe (No. 1) went on to dominate Fung in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to lengthen the match lead to 3-0. Washington responded with back-to-back singles wins on courts six and four to cut the Alabama match lead to 3-2. The Huskies went on to equalize the match score at 3-3, as Alabama's No. 109-ranked singles player in Spielmann (No. 3) lost a match that was decided in three sets to Miki Kobayashi, 6-2, 7-6(7), 6-4. With the match point on the line, freshman Maddie Pothoff (No. 5) came up just short to Hance in a three-set thriller, 6-0, 5-7, 7-6(4), as Washington clinched the 4-3 match victory.
