Alabama Women’s Tennis Defeats UAB and Alabama State to Begin 2017 Season

Crimson Tide tallied nine singles wins and six doubles victories in Sunday’s doubleheader
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team blanked UAB, 4-0, and Alabama State, 7-0, in back-to-back matches to officially begin the 2017 season on Sunday at the Roberta Alison Baumgardener Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide tallied nine singles wins and six doubles victory combined.
Alabama dominated doubles play in the first match of the day against UAB, as it won all three matches. Senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff tallied the Tide's first doubles victory from the No. 1 position, as the pair blanked Pardis Kianoush and Marlene Herrmann, 6-0. Sophomore Andie Daniell and freshman Kimberley Gintrand topped Hana Sisirak and Reghan Lynch, 6-3, from the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point, giving Alabama a 1-0 match lead going into singles play. Senior Danielle Spielmann and junior Smith Hinton played their match out from the No. 3 position, as the couple outlasted Sophie Dodds and McKenna Root in a 6-4 decision.
The momentum continued to roll for the Tide in singles play, as freshman Juliana Valero (No. 5) blanked Taylor Factor in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, before senior Joanna Savva (No. 6) gave Alabama a 3-0 match lead when she topped Natalie Voss in straight sets as well, 6-0, 6-0. Alabama's 109th-ranked singles player in Spielmann clinched the 4-0 match victory, as she recorded the Tide's third singles win in straight sets defeating Reghan Lynch, 6-0, 6-0.
Alabama maintained its rhythm in the second match of the day, as it tallied three doubles victories against Alabama State to improve to 6-0 on the day in doubles. Daniell and Spielmann partnered up to pick up the Tide's first doubles win of the match, as the couple blanked Mirna Curcic and Gabriela Lackova, 6-0. Routliffe and Pothoff collected their second doubles victory together, as the duo clinched the doubles point from the No. 1 spot in a 6-1 decision over Marine Cartier and Reka Szentes. Valero and Saava finished their match from the No. 3 position, where they topped Brankica Orlovic and Marija Blazevic in a 6-2 decision.
The Tide won all six of its singles matches against the Hornets, all of which were decided in straight sets. Valero (No. 4) quickly defeated Curcic, 6-2, 6-1, before Daniell (No. 1) topped Cartier, 6-2, 6-1, to give the Tide a 3-0 match advantage. Gintrand (No. 6) was able to clinch the match for the Tide for the first time in her career as she dominated Blazevic in a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Saava (No. 5) went on to overcome Orlovic, 6-0, 6-1, before Spielmann (No. 2) conquered Szentes, 6-1, 6-0, to extend the match lead to 6-0. Hinton (No. 3) put the final stamp on the Tide victory, as she outlasted Lackova, 6-3, 6-3, giving Alabama the 7-0 victory over the Hornets.
The Tide will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 20, when it hosts Illinois at the Roberta Alison Baumgardener Tennis Facility in a match that is set to start at 6 p.m. CT.
