Haylie McCleney and Jaclyn Traina lead Team USA to 6-1 record
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Former Alabama softball standouts Haylie McCleney and Jaclyn Traina guided Team USA to a silver medal at the World Cup of Softball XI, held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla., this past week.
McCleney hit .400 over seven starts, scoring eight runs and tallying eight hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple. She earned at least one hit in five of her seven games and went 4-4 in the July 9 win over the Netherlands. Traina pitched in two games, throwing 3.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits with five strikeouts.
Team USA won its first six games by a combined score of 54-2, defeating the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Australia, the Netherlands, China and Venezuela. This set up a championship game against Japan, the eighth meeting between the two teams in the title game at the World Cup of Softball. In a low-scoring thriller, Japan broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning to ultimately win, 2-1.
Traina is in her fourth season with the US National Team while McCleney is in her third. At Alabama, Traina was a four-time All-American pitcher from 2011-14 and helped guide the Crimson Tide to its first national title as a sophomore in 2012. McCleney completed her senior season in 2016, earning her fourth All-America nod and capping her career as the program leader in batting average (.447), on base percentage (.569), walks (199) and triples (16).
