TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team earned three victories on Saturday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium, starting the day with a bang as the Crimson Tide defeated ninth-ranked Ole Miss, 4-2. Alabama then closed out the evening with a pair of wins against Alabama State, 4-1 and 5-0.
"There were moments of greatness from a lot of guys and some moments where nerves took over, but I thought they fought through it," said Alabama head coach George Husack. "Today was a great display of courage and trust because we've been so close, and not really fearing the unknown and just going for it."
The Tide (11-9, 1-2 SEC) got down early after dropping the doubles point to the Rebels (9-3, 1-1 SEC) but came back with a vengeance in singles to take four of the six points. Nikko Madregallejo posted Alabama's first point as his opponent retired due to injury before Ole Miss tacked on its second point of the afternoon with a win on court two. From there, it was all Crimson Tide with wins coming from Stuart Kenyon on court five, Korey Lovett on court one, who beat three-time All-American and 2014 SEC Player of the Year Nik Scholtz, and Becker O'Shaughnessey, who clinched the victory on an ace at the No. 3 spot.
Alabama then played Alabama State (2-11) in a pair of matches, allowing the young Tide squad to gain valuable match experience. UA came away with wins in all but two of the matches, one coming in singles and another in doubles. Both Lovett and Danny Kerznerman shut out their Hornet counterparts at the No.1 singles positions, 6-0, 6-0.
Next up, Alabama hits the road for a pair of SEC matches at Auburn and Florida. The match against the Tigers is slated for Friday, March 13, at 4 p.m. CT, while Sunday's contest in Gainesville versus the Gators will begin at Noon CT.
