OXFORD, Mississippi - Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace threw three touchdown passes in the second half to lead the 11th-ranked Rebels (5-0 overall; 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference) to a 23-17 win over the No. 3/1 Alabama Crimson Tide before a sold-out crowd of 61,826 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford.
A mistake in special teams ended up being the difference in the tightly-contested game between two of the nation's best teams as a fumbled kickoff inside Alabama territory with 5:29 left set up the deciding score. Wallace passed for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 18 of 31 attempts without an interception. Alabama quarterback Blake Sims threw for 228 yards while completing 19 of 31 with 1 interception without throwing a touchdown pass. Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper was held under 100 yards for the first time in seven games, but had game-high totals with nine catches for 91 yards. His totals moved him into third place in Alabama history for career receptions with 156.
The Alabama offense had 396 total yards, marking the first time in six games that the Crimson Tide has not exceeded 500 yards of total offense. Running back T.J. Yeldon rushed for a game-high 123 yards on 20 attempts. Yeldon moved into sixth place in the Alabama record book in career rushing yards. He now has 2,750 yards for his career and passed Johnny Musso (1969-71: 2,741) for sixth place. Trent Richardson (2009-11: 3,130) is ahead of Yeldon in fifth place.
The loss marked only the second time in the last 66 games since the start of the 2008 season that the Crimson Tide has lost a game while rushing for at least 140 yards. Alabama had 168 yards on the ground Saturday in Oxford, passing for 228. But it was an inability to prevent big plays by the Ole Miss passing game that ended up costing the Tide dearly as the Rebels converted several key third down plays late in the game and made big plays in the passing game throughout the second half. Ole Miss passed for 185 yards and three touchdowns in the second half of Saturday's game.
Cornerback Cyrus Jones had 3 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss (5 yards), forced a fumble, recovered a fumble that he returned for a touchdown and broke up 2 passes. Sims passed deep in the end zone to Howard but the pass was intercepted by Ole Miss cornerback Senquez Golson, who caught the ball as he fell out of the end zone and the play was ruled an incompletion out of bounds. The call was overturned, giving the Rebels an interception and possession of the ball at the Ole Miss 20 with 37 seconds on the clock.
Ole Miss downed the ball twice to end the game and complete its first win over the Crimson Tide since 2003, ending a 10-game Alabama winning streak in the series.
