Fayetteville, Arkansas - Defensive end Jonathan Allen blocked an extra point to make the difference in the game as the 7th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1 overall; 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference) defeated the unranked Arkansas Razorbacks (3-3 overall; 0-3 in the SEC), 14-13, before a sellout crowd of 72,337 Saturday night on Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium (capacity: 72,000).
Allen's deflection of the extra-point attempt by Arkansas placekicker John Henson in the second quarter protected what was a 7-6 lead by the Tide at the time. The Razorbacks stormed back on a touchdown drive after Alabama broke out on top via a 22-yard pass from quarterback Blake Sims to running back T.J. Yeldon earlier in the second period.
Alabama won despite being limited to 227 yards of total offense, including only 66 rushing yards, losing two fumbles. Arkansas held possession of the ball for 34:13 of game time while outgaining Alabama 335-227, but the Hogs could not capitalize on early opportunities after two Alabama turnovers deep in Crimson Tide territory on punts in the first period. The first scoring chance was squandered when Tide linebacker Trey DePriest caused a fumble that went out of the end zone on an apparent 6-yard touchdown pass by Arkansas. The second chance ended when the Tide defense forced a punt on three downs after the Hogs gained possession at the Tide 40, but Arkansas only gained 2 yards on the ensuing march.
Running back T.J. Yeldon rushed for a team-high 45 yards on 16 attempts. Sims completed 11 of 21 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. DeAndrew White caught four passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Yeldon had two catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Linebacker Reggie Ragland led the Tide with a game-high 12 tackles (seven solos) and broke up a pass and shared a tackle for loss. Safety Landon Collins had eight tackles, an interception and broke up two passes. Xzavier Dickson also had eight stops, including a quarterback sack. Defensive lineman Jarran Reed had five tackles, one for a loss, and broke up two passes. DePriest had six tackles, shared a tackle for loss, and forced a fumble.
Freshman punter JK Scott had eight punts in the game for 354 yards, an average of 44.2 yards per punt. Seven of his eight punts were inside the 20, including a 58-yarder.
Arkansas won the opening coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.
Adam Griffith kicked off for Alabama from the Tide 35 and the kickoff was downed in the end zone. On first down from the Arkansas 25, running back Johnathan Williams gained two yards on a run at left guard. On second down quarterback Brandon Allen's pass intended for wide receiver Demetrius Wilson was broken up incomplete by Tide cornerback Cyrus Jones at the Tide 43. On third and 8, Allen passed complete to tight end A.J. Derby on a crossing pattern for four yards. That forced a punt from the Arkansas 31. Christion Jones tried to dive on the bouncing football after not fielding it in the air, but he could not grab it and Arkansas' Kody Walker recovered the fumble at the Tide 31 with 13:27 on the clock.
From there, Allen kept for 14 yards around right end to the 17, the Williams rushed for 5 yards to the Tide 12. On second and 5 Allen passed to Walker for 6 yards to a first and goal at the Tide 6. On first down Williams was stopped for no gain on a run at left end. On the next play, Allen passed complete to Walker at the goal line for a 6-yard gain. Walker fumbled when hit by Tide linebacker Trey DePriest before he entered the end zone and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a touchback. Officials conducted a video review of the play, confirming the call on the field. The game remained scoreless with 11:16 left in the first period.
The Tide started the ensuing possession at its 20-yard line. On first down Sims passed to wide receiver DeAndrew White on a crossing pattern for 7 yards to the 27. A pass from Sims for fullback Jalston Fowler was deflected and fell incomplete. On third and 3 Sims passed for a wide open Amari Cooper on a shot curl route but the pass was overthrown incomplete. JK Scott entered to punt and his 58-yard kick was not fielded, downed at the Arkansas 15 with 10:30 on the clock.
On first down from the Hogs 15 Allen fumbled on a fake handoff and fell on the fumble at the Hogs 10 for a 5-yard loss. On second and 15 Williams carried on a delay for 7 yards to the 17 to set up third and 8. On third down Allen passed to tight end Hunter Henry on a slant pattern for 15 yards and a first down at the Arkansas 31. On first down Williams carried at right guard and weaved for 9 yards to the 40 to set up second and 1. On second down Allen took a bootleg to his left for 2 yards to a first down at the Arkansas 42. Running back Korliss Marshall carried at left tackle for a yard to the 43. Allen passed off play-action to wide receiver Demetrius Wilson for 18 yards and a first down at the Alabama 39. Williams carried for 4 yards on first down to the Tide 35. On second and 6 Allen passed to Williams across the middle for 6 yards and a first down at the Tide 29. Allen and Williams connected again on first down on a rollout pass for 3 yards to the Tide 26. On second and 7 Williams carried at left guard for no gain. Allen passed for Wilson in the end zone on third down, but the pass fell incomplete. Adam McFain entered to try a 43-yard field goal, but the snap was mishandled. Holder Matt Emrich gathered the ball but was tackled for a 9-yard loss by Cyrus Jones and Alabama took over at its 35-yard line.
A pass from Sims to White was stopped for a loss of 3 yards at the 32. A handoff to Yeldon around right end gained 3 yards to the 35, setting up third and 10 from there. Sims' pass on third down intended for Cooper was partially deflected and almost intercepted but fell incomplete. JK Scott entered to punt from the Tide 35. His punt was not fielded, landed at the Arkansas 20, and bounced to the 15 before it went out of bounds for a 50-yard punt. Arkansas took possession with 2:21 left in the first quarter.
An illegal formation penalty moved the ball back 5 yards to the Arkansas 10 to set up first and 15. A pass along the sideline was incomplete on first down. On second down Williams took a handoff around right end, eluded Tide cornerback Eddie Jackson and gained 17 yards to a first down at the Hogs 27. A run by Marshall at the left side was stuffed for a 2-yard loss by Ryan Anderson and DePriest at the Hogs 25. On second and 12 Allen's pass along the sideline for an open Drew Morgan was high and incomplete. On third and 12 Allen scrambled to evade pressure and threw across the middle but Tide safety Landon Collins batted down the pass and almost intercepted at the Arkansas 35 to set up a punt. A 36-yard punt by Sam Irwin-Hill bounced off of Alabama's Maurice Smith and Arkansas' Alan D'Appollonio recovered at the Alabama 39-yard line.
On first down, Williams was stopped for a loss of 1 by Collins and A'Shawn Robinson as the first quarter ended.
Through one quarter of play, the Alabama offense had run 6 offensive plays and gained a total of 7 yards. The Tide had lost 2 turnovers on punts. Arkansas possessed the ball for 12:55 of the quarter, outgained Alabama by a 101-7 margin. Yet the game remained scoreless.
The second quarter began with Arkansas facing a second and 11 play at the Alabama 40. Running back Alex Collins took a handoff for 2 yards up the middle to the Tide 38. On third and 9 Allen passed to wide receiver Keon Hatcher on a slant pattern but the pass was incomplete. Arkansas punted. Sam Irwin-Hill's punt sailed into the end zone and Alabama took over at its 20 with 14:09 on the clock.
On first down from the Tide 20, Yeldon took a handoff at right tackle for 8 yards to the 28. On second and 2 Yeldon carried at right guard for 5 yards and the Tide's first first down of the game at the 13:40 mark of the second period. From the Tide 33 on first down Yeldon took a handoff to the right side and was downed for a loss of 5 at the Tide 28. On second down Sims passed to tight end O.J. Howard on a seam route down the middle of the field for a 47-yard gain to the Arkansas 25. On first down Yeldon was stopped for a loss of 2 on a run around right end but Arkansas was penalized half the distance to the goal from the 25 for a horse collar tackle, moving the ball to the Arkansas 12 (a 13-yard penalty). On first down, Sims kept at right end for 4 yards to the Hogs 8. On second and 6 from the 8 running back Derrick Henry took his first carry of the game to the left side for no gain. On third and 6 from the 8 Sims dropped to pass as if looking for Amari Cooper to Sims' right, then turned to his left but was sacked by Arkansas defensive end Trey Flowers for a loss of 5 yards at the Arkansas 13. Adam Griffith entered to attempt a 30-yard field goal but his kick was no good, wide to the right, with 9:48 left in the second quarter.
The sloppy nature of the game continued. On first down, Arkansas running back Alex Collins carried at right tackle for 6 yards and fumbled. Tide nose guard A'Shawn Robinson caused the fumble and Tide linebacker Ryan Anderson recovered at the Arkansas 26, returning it 3 yards to the Arkansas 23.
On first down, Sims passed to the end zone for Cooper but the ball was thrown right in the hands of Arkansas free safety Alan Turner, who could not catch what would have been an interception in the end zone. On second down Yeldon gained 1 on a run at left guard. On third down Sims passed to Yeldon at the Arkansas 4 and Yeldon lunged over the goal line to complete a 22-yard touchdown pass with 8:40 left in the second quarter. Griffith's conversion kick was good and the Tide had a 7-0 lead.
Korliss Marshall returned Griffith's ensuing kickoff from the Arkansas 4 for 15 yards to the Hogs 19. Allen passed to Hatcher off play action for 21 yards to the Hogs 40 and a first down. Williams was stopped by DePriest for no gain on first down. On second and 10 from the Arkansas 40 Allen passed to Marshall out of the backfield for 4 yards to the 44 before Collins forced him out of bounds. On third and 6 Allen passed to Henry in tight coverage for 10 yards and a first down at the Tide 46. Allen play faked and threw to his right, faking out most of the defense, on a long pass to Henry but the pass was broken up. Alabama was flagged for pass interference. The 15-yard penalty gave Arkansas a first down at the Tide 31. On first down Allen found Derby for 16 yards on a pass in the middle of the field for a first down at the Tide 15. Williams took a handoff up the middle and bounced for 6 yards to the Tide 9. On second and 4 at the 9 Allen passed to fullback Kody Walker for 3 yards to the Tide 6. After a timeout by Arkansas, on third and 1 at the 6 Williams gained 4 yards to a first down at the Tide 2. On first and goal at the 2 Allen took naked bootleg to the right side but was dropped for a loss of 1 by Robinson. Williams took a pitch sweep to the left side for 3 yards and a touchdown with 3:47 left in the second quarter. John Henson's extra-point kick was blocked by Jonathan Allen and sailed wide left, no good. Alabama led Arkansas, 7-6.
Adam McFain's kickoff was fielded at the Tide 6 by Christion Jones, who returned the kickoff 22 yards to the Tide 28. On first down Sims' pass to Cooper was incomplete. On second and 10 Yeldon carried at right guard for 2 yards to the Tide 30. On third and 8 Sims found White for a pass completion of 21 yards and a first down at the Arkansas 49. Sims then passed to Cooper on a curl that Cooper turned into a 12-yard gain and a first down at the Arkansas 37. Cooper and Arkansas linebacker Martrell Spaight were both injured on the play. Yeldon bounced outside left tackle and out of bounds on a run that gained 1 yard to the Arkansas 36. On second down from the shotgun, Sims passed to White on a short pass that lost a yard. On third and 10 at the Arkansas 37 Sims rolled right and passed incomplete. On fourth and 10 from the Arkansas 37 with 56 seconds left in the half, Scott entered to punt. After a penalty for delay of game was declined, Scott perfectly pooched a punt that landed around the Arkansas 10 and rolled to the Arkansas 2, where it was downed with 43 seconds on the clock. Alabama had all three timeouts remaining while Arkansas had two.
On first down, a carry by Williams was stopped for a gain of a yard to the Hogs 3. Alabama called its first timeout with 39 seconds left. On second down Williams carried at the middle for no gain at the Arkansas 3. Alabama called its second timeout with 31 seconds left. On third and 9 from the 3 Williams carried at left tackle, bounced and spun off tacklers to gain 21 yards and a first down at the Hogs 24, going out of bounds with 21 seconds on the clock. On first down a deep pass by Allen for Hatcher was broken up by Tide safety Landon Collins who dropped a sure interception around the Tide 35. On second and 10 with 14 seconds left from the Arkansas 24, Allen took a knee for a yard loss and the half ended with Alabama leading, 7-6.
At the half, Arkansas held a 195-119 edge in total offense. The Hogs had outgained the Tide 84-11 in rushing and 111-108 in passing while holding a 19:33 to 10:27 edge in time of possession. The Hogs were 4 of 8 on third down while the Tide was 2 of 6. Arkansas had 13 first downs to the Tide's 6 and both teams had given up the ball twice on turnovers. Defensively for Alabama, linebacker Reggie Ragland, safety Landon Collins and linebacker Trey DePriest all had 6 tackles. DePriest and nose guard A'Shawn Robinson had forced fumbles for Alabama. Yeldon led the Tide with 15 yards rushing on 7 carries while White had 3 catches for 27 yards. Sims was 6 of 12 for 108 yards and a touchdown but Cooper had only 1 catch for 12 yards and had left the game with an injury late in the half. For Arkansas, Williams had 78 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Allen was 12 of 19 for 111 yards passing.
Arkansas kicked off to start the second half. Alabama's Christion Jones returned the kickoff from the Tide 1 for 26 yards and the Alabama offense began the possession at the Tide 27-yard line. Cooper returned to action as the second half starter after being injured late in the first half. On first down, Yeldon carried at right guard for a yard. On second and 9 at the 28 Sims was sacked by defensive tackle Darius Philon as he looked to pass, losing 13 yards to the Tide 9. On third and 22 from the 15, a screen pass to Yeldon gained 13 yards to the 28 and JK Scott entered to punt for the Tide. Scott boomed a 55-yard punt that rolled out of bounds at the Arkansas 17 with 12:35 on the clock.
On first down Williams carried for a yard to the Hogs 18. On second and 9 Allen threw for Hatcher on a deep post but the pass was incomplete via good coverage by Tide cornerback Cyrus Jones. On third and 9 Allen passed under pressure to Hatcher for an 11-yard completion and a first down at the Arkansas 29. A power sweep to the left by Collins lost 3 yards as Collins and Ragland led the tacklers for the Tide. On second and 13 at the 26 Allen threw to Collins on a short pass but Tide safety Landon Collins downed Collins for a 3-yard gain to create third and 10. From the Hogs 29 Allen worked from the shotgun formation, rolled right and evaded pressure to find Hatcher wide open in the flat for a 26-yard pass play to a first down at the Tide 45 with 9:35 on the clock. A pass by Allen was incomplete on second down, but offsetting penalties negated the play. On the next second and 8 from the Tide 43 Allen passed to Derby in the flat for 3 yards to set up third and 5 at the Tide 40. Arkansas incurred a delay of game penalty, costing them 5 yards and setting up third and 10 at the Tide 45. Allen passed to Wilson, who tipped the pass in the air and caught it for an 11-yuard completion and a first down at the Tide 34. On first down Allen was sacked as he attempted to throw by Tide defensive end Jarran Reed for a loss of a yard. On second and 11, Reed deflected a pass to cause an incompletion. On third and 11 at the Tide 35 a pass to the end zone for wide receiver Cody Hollister was incomplete with Cyrus Jones covering. From the Tide 35 Irwin-Hill entered to punt. His 24-yard pooch punt was fielded by Cyrus Jones, who fair caught it at the Tide 11 with 6:55 left in the third period.
On first down from the 11, Derrick Henry took a handoff at right guard for 3 yards to the 14. On second down, Henry carried at right tackle for 1 yard to the 15. On third and 6 a pass intended for Cooper was broken up incomplete by Arkansas defensive back Tevin Mitchel. Scott entered to punt. Scott's 42-yard punt went out of bounds at the Arkansas 43 with 5:45 showing on the clock.
On first down at the Arkansas 43, Alex Collins carried for 3 yards up the middle. On second down Allen passed for Henry but the play was out of bounds incomplete. On third down and 7 at the 46 Allen connected on a pass to Derby on a short crossing pattern that Derby turned into a 54-yard touchdown play as he outran two Tide defenders and lunged into the end zone. John Henson's extra-point attempt was good and Arkansas held a 13-7 lead with 4:43 left in the third quarter.
Henson kicked short and Landon Collins fielded the kick at the Tide 21. Collins returned it 9 yards to the 30 where he fumbled when hit by Arkansas' Rohan Gaines. The Tide's Ryan Anderson took the ball out of the air and advanced it to the Tide 35 where the Alabama offense began with 4:32 on the clock. On first down Yeldon ran for 2 yards at right tackle. On second down Sims passed incomplete after evading pressure, missing an open White on a deep pass at the Arkansas 32. On third down Sims scrambled under pressure and gained 7 yards to the Tide 44. Scott entered to punt and his 41-yard punt was fair caught by Arkansas' D.J. Dean at the Arkansas 15.
The Hogs took over at their 15 with 3:05 left in the third period holding a 13-7 lead. On first down Williams carried at left guard for 2 yards. On second and 8 from the 17 Allen looked to pass but could not find an open receiver so he scrambled and reversed field before being dropped for a loss of 2 yards by Tide linebacker Xzavier Dickson at the Hogs 15. On third and 1- Allen was sacked for a loss of 5 yards by Ryan Anderson at the Arkansas 10. Irwin-Hill entered to punt for Arkansas from his end zone. The punt was not fielded and rolled to the Tide 44, a 46-yard punt, and the Tide took over with 36 seconds left in the third quarter.
On first down Yeldon took a handoff at left tackle for 12 yards and a first down at the Arkansas 44. Yeldon took a handoff at left tackle, but was stopped for no gain this time as the third period ended.
Arkansas outgained Alabama in the third quarter, 105 to 26, while converting 4 of 6 third downs into first downs. At the end of the third period, Arkansas had a 300 to 145 edge in total offense including a 219-124 edge in passing yardage and an 81-24 advantage on the ground. Arkansas had a 17-7 edge in first downs and had converted 8 of 14 third down plays into first downs, compared to Alabama's 2 of 9 on third downs. Arkansas had a 28:44 to 16:16 edge in time of possession entering the game's final quarter.
The fourth quarter began with Alabama facing a second and 10 at the Arkansas 44. Sims hit Fowler on a fullback waggle for 9 yards to the Arkansas 35 to set up third and 1. On third down Henry took a handoff around right tackle and gained a head of steam to bull for 8 yards and a first down at the Arkansas 27-yard line. With 14:24 to play, Alabama had first down at the Hogs 27. On first down Sims passed to receiver Cam Sims in traffic for 15 yards and a first down at the Arkansas 12 with 13:54 left in the fourth quarter. After a timeout for an injury to an Arkansas player, play resumed. Henry took a handoff around right end for 2 yards to the Arkansas 10. On second and 8 Henry took a handoff up the middle for 4 yards to the Arkansas 6. On third and 4 Sims rolled to his right and found a wide open DeAndrew White in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown, completing a 6-yard touchdown pass with 12:36 on the clock. Griffith's extra-point kick was true and Alabama had a 14-13 lead.
Eric Hawkins took the ensuing kickoff at the Hogs 7-yard line. Reggie Ragland wrapped him up at the Arkansas 15 after an 8-yard return. On first down from the 15 Alex Collins gained 5 on a run at right guard. On second down a run by Alex Collins in the middle was stopped for no gain by Jarran Reed. On third and 5 at the 20 Allen passed as he ran but the pass was incomplete, forcing an Arkansas punt. Sam Irwin-Hill entered to punt but ran to the line of scrimmage as if to run a play, then Arkansas called its first timeout of the second half with 11:02 on the clock. From punt formation again, Irwin-Hill punted this time, the kick traveling 38 yards to the Tide 42 where Cyrus Jones caught the punt. Jones had a lane to return the kick but dropped the ball as he began running. Alabama's Trey DePriest recovered the fumble amidst a crowd of players and Jones was credited with a 6-yard return to the Tide 48.
Alabama took possession at its 48-yard line with 10:50 showing on the clock, holding a 14-13 lead. On first down Yeldon took a handoff around right end and was stopped for a loss of a yard. On second and 11 at the Tide 47 Sims passed incomplete. On third and 11 Sims found Cooper on a short pass that Cooper turned into a 10-yard gain to the Arkansas 43. On fourth and 1 at the Hogs 43 with 9:51 left in the fourth quarter, Alabama hurried to the line of scrimmage and Sims tried a quarterback sneak. He was stopped inches short by Darius Philon and Braylon Mitchell, and Arkansas took possession at the Arkansas 43 with 9:37 on the clock.
On first down, Allen was sacked for a loss of 11 yards on a blitz by Tide cornerback Eddie Jackson at the Arkansas 32. On second and 21 Allen passed for six yards to Jeremy Sprinkle. On third and 15, Allen looked to pass but was flushed from the pocket. He scrambled for a 14-yard gain to the Tide 48, a yard short of a first down. With fourth and 1 looming and 7:28 on the clock, game officials granted Arkansas' request for a review of the play to determine if the ball had been spotted properly. The review showed the spot was correct and Arkansas was assessed its second timeout of the half. The Hogs faced fourth and 1 at the Tide 48 with 7:28 remaining. Arkansas had one timeout left while Alabama had all 3 of its timeouts remaining. The Hogs lined up their offense to go for the first down on fourth down. A rush at left guard by Williams was stopped for no gain by Tide linebacker Xzavier Dickson with 7:21 on the clock, Alabama took possession on downs at its own 48.
On first down, a jet sweep by Cooper lost 6 yards to the Tide 42. On second and 16 Sims' pass to Cam Sims was incomplete. That set up third and 16 from the Alabama 42 with 6:47 on the clock. Yeldon took a handoff off right tackle and gained 7 yards to the Tide 49, setting up a punt. Scott entered the game to punt for the Tide with D.J. Dean deep for Arkansas at his 10. An illegal substitution penalty by Arkansas moved the ball up 5 yards to the Arkansas 46 and a fourth and 3 situation. Alabama remained in punt formation. Scott lofted a high coverage punt that Dean fair caught at the Arkansas 12, a 34-yard punt.
Arkansas took possession at its 12-yard line with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter. On first down Allen passed to fullback Patrick Arinze for 7 yards to the Arkansas 19. On second and 3 Allen's pass was incomplete, broken up by the Tide's Jarran Reed. On third and 3 Allen's pass intended for Sprinkle was broken up by Tide safety Jarrick Williams at the 25. Irwin-Hill punted to Cyrus Jones, a 39-yard punt that Jones returned 1 yard to set up Alabama at its 43 with 5:09 on the clock.
On first down Henry ran at right tackle for 7 yards to the 50 to set up second and 3. After an official timeout for an injured player, the Tide faced second and 3 with the clock running under 5 minutes. Yeldon took a handoff at right guard and gained 2 yards to set up third and 1 at the Arkansas 48. Alabama ran the play clock down under 5 seconds, then called timeout with 3:46 on the clock (its first of the second half) to talk it over heading into a crucial third down and short play. An illegal substitution penalty cost Alabama 5 yards, creating a third and 6 at the Tide 47. Sims faded to pass, but was pressured and could not find a receiver open, so he ran from the pocket and lunged for a 5-yard gain to the Arkansas 48 to set up fourth and 1. The clock moved under 3:15 as Scott lined up to punt. A delay of game penalty was called on Alabama, moving the ball back 5 yards to the Tide 47. With 3:03 on the clock, Alabama lined up to punt again. Scott fluttered a short kick that was not fielded, but it took a favorable roll for Alabama and ended up as a 39-yard punt that was downed at the Arkansas 14 with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter.
On first down Allen was flushed from the pocket and passed incomplete. On second and 10 from the shotgun Allen could not find an open receiver and threw the ball out of bounds. On third and 10 with 2:33 left, Allen was in the shotgun again. This time he found tight end Hunter Henry for 14 yards and a first down at the Hogs' 28. On the next play, Allen's pass for Henry was caught out of bounds. On second and 10 with 2:13 left on the clock, Allen passed high and incomplete on a slant to Demetrius Wilson. On third and 10 from the Arkansas 28 with 2:09 on the clock, Allen had running back Jonathan Williams open behind Tide safety Landon Collins. But Allen's pass for Williams lacked velocity, allowing Collins to close on Williams and intercept the pass as he fell to the ground at the Tide 49-yard line with 1:59 on the clock.
Arkansas had 1 timeout remaining as the Tide took possession. On first down, Yeldon carried up the middle for a yard to the 50. Arkansas used its final timeout with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. Alabama faced second and 9 at the 50 and Sims faked a handoff to Henry, then kept on a naked bootleg to his right, gaining 7 yards to the Arkansas 43.
