TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Crimson Tide fell to the Auburn Tigers, 65-55, in women's basketball action Thursday night at Foster Auditorium. With the loss, Alabama falls to 10-6 on the season, 0-2 in Southeastern Conference play. Auburn improves to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the league.
"(The loss) was tough," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "Not just because of the loss, but because of the way we played together. I think the big thing is, and this is what we just got finished talking to the team about, is losing is one thing because someone might outplay you and all that. They didn't necessarily outplay us, I'm not taking anything away from Auburn, but I'm telling you we've played better basketball than what we played tonight. As a group, we didn't have that energy, especially in the second half, to go and believe we could get it done."
Sophomore guard Shafontaye Myers led the Tide with 13 points, while senior guard Ericka Russell added 12 points for Alabama. Junior forward Erin Hogue grabbed nine boards to lead the Tide in rebounding.
Alabama jumped out to an early 11-3 lead, but the Tigers would fight their way back and tie the game with just under two minutes remaining in the first. Hogue made a basket before the end of the half to put the Tide up 26-24 at the break.
The second half started with Alabama and Auburn trading baskets and the lead. Both teams were plagued by turnovers, each ending the game with 18. Alabama had 10 steals in the game, while Auburn had six. Auburn was finally able to pull ahead of the Tide around the 10:00 mark of the second half. Thought the Tide would pull within two on a three-pointer by Russell, the Tigers would hold on for a 65-55 victory.
Auburn was led by sophomore forward Tyrese Tanner, who had 20 points. Freshman guard Hasina Muhammad added 12 points, and junior forward Blanche Alverson chipped in 11 points. Alverson and senior center Chantel Hilliard were the leading rebounders for the Tigers, each grabbing seven boards.
Alabama returns to action Sunday, January 8, when it faces LSU in Baton Rouge. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised regionally by the SEC Network.
