TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Crimson Tide fell to the seventh-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers, 86-56, in Foster Auditorium on Thursday night. With the loss, the Tide falls to 10-11 overall and 0-7 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Lady Vols improve to 15-5 overall and 6-1 against league foes.
"We played about as hard as we've played in a long time," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "Tennessee's a really good basketball team. I thought we competed, hung in there and did a lot of good things. It's just one of those games where you're playing against a good team, and you can't let them score like they were scoring."
Junior forward Kyra Crosby led the Tide with 15 points, while junior guard Meghan Perkins finished with eight points and a team-best seven rebounds.
After falling behind early, Alabama mounted a comeback that saw the Tide behind 16-10 seven minutes into the game. Tennessee would score 12 of the next 14 points however, and the Tide would pull no closer in the game. Both teams traded buckets before Alabama closed the gap to trail 47-32 at the half.
The Lady Vols hit a three-pointer to open the second half, but the Tide was able to cut into the lead to trail 52-40 with just under 17 minutes to play. Tennessee answered the Tide's run, and continued to pull away in the half. The Lady Vols would take their largest lead with 2:32 remaining when they went ahead by 33.
Tennessee was led by senior forward Shekinna Stricklen with 14 points. Senior forward Glory Johnson finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while freshman point guard Ariel Massengale led the Lady Vols with 11 assists.
Next, Alabama will travel to Lexington on Sunday for an afternoon game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Tipoff will be at 1 p.m. CT.
