LEXINGTON, Ky. - The women's basketball team fell, 82-68, at No. 6 Kentucky on Sunday in Memorial Coliseum. The Crimson Tide was able to pull within 11 after trailing by as many as 25 points, but was unable to get any closer. With the loss, Alabama moves to 10-12 overall and 0-8 against Southeastern Conference opponents, while the Wildcats improve to 20-2 on the season and 9-0 versus league foes.
"We played a really good basketball team in Kentucky today," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "I thought we competed well and played hard and showed that when we play together, we are capable of being a good basketball team. We are also finally getting some of our players healthy again, which certainly helps."
Junior Kyra Crosby and sophomore Jasmine Robinson led Alabama in scoring with 14 points apiece. Sophomore Khristin Lee followed closely with 12 points, in addition to six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
Kentucky won the opening tip and drove straight to the hoop to get on the board first. Alabama scored the next five points to lead early on, however the Wildcats would jump back in front moments later. The Tide took the lead back at the 15:05 mark following a pair of free throws from Crosby. From there, Kentucky would go on to outscore Alabama 36-18 in the half and would head into the break with a 46-29 advantage.
The Wildcats continued to hold a significant buffer in scoring until a 24-11 run by the Tide spanning just over six minutes brought Alabama within 11 of Kentucky with 7:40 to play. The Wildcats scored the next five points to extend their lead out to 16, but the Tide answered back and cut it down to 11 on two more occasions. Alabama would come no closer, however, as Kentucky outscored the Tide 9-6 down the stretch.
For the game, Kentucky shot 45.7 percent (32-for-70) compared to Alabama's 37.5 percent (24-for-64) performance. Neither team shot well from the free throw line as the Tide went 18-for-32 (56.3 percent), while the Wildcats were 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from the stripe.
Alabama's 68 points were the second-most given up by Kentucky in SEC play this season.
The Tide remains on the road for its next contest, as it heads to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas on Thursday, February 2. Tipoff if slated for 7 p.m. CT.
