TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Crimson Tide fell to the Mississippi Rebels, 69-55, in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Foster Auditorium. Alabama was led in scoring by junior forward Kyra Crosby with 14 points, while sophomore guard Jasmine Robinson added 12 points. Sophomore guard Khristin Lee led the Tide in rebounding with eight boards as well as assists with seven.
"The big key is at the end of the day, when you have opportunities to score and the other team is scoring, you have to matchup," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "In the second half we started digging a whole because they were scoring and we weren't. We got it cut to four but that energy that it took to get there we just couldn't convert back up. It's not a complicated game. We are going to have to play better, shoot better, make the layups and when we get an opportunity, we've got to score."
After a close back-and-forth beginning, Mississippi pulled away from the Tide, building as much as a 13 point lead with six and a half minutes left in the first half. Alabama would put together a run to close the gap and would go into halftime trailing 38-31.
The Tide would come out to make the first basket of the second half, but the Rebels would answer with two baskets of their own. A jumper by Robinson at the 15:48 mark cut Alabama's deficit down to four, but from there, Mississippi would go on to score nine unanswered points. The Rebels outscored the Tide 31-24 in the second half, and would win by 14.
Mississippi was led in scoring by sophomore guard Valencia McFarland, who finished with 25 points. Leading the Rebels with nine rebounds was freshman forward Tia Faleru.
With the loss, Alabama falls to 10-9 on the season and 0-5 in Southeastern Conference play. Mississippi improves to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the league with the win. Next up, the Tide travels to Gainesville to face Florida on January 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
