GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The women's basketball team dropped a 61-37 decision at Florida on Thursday evening in the O'Connell Center. With the loss, the Crimson Tide drops to 10-10 on the season and 0-6 versus Southeastern Conference opponents, while the Gators improve to 13-6 overall and 3-3 against league foes.
"Despite the score, I thought we grew up some as a basketball team," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "We had three or four players step up tonight from a leadership standpoint, which is something we need to see more of. Obviously the shots were not falling, and you need that to happen in order to win a basketball game. Florida did a good job of doing what they needed to do to dictate the tempo and come out with a win."
Florida got on the board first with a pair of free throws less than a minute into the game. Alabama would tie it up on the alternating possession and soon take the lead, going on a 5-2 run over the next two minutes. The Tide would go scoreless over the next five minutes, allowing the Gators to get back in the game and eventually go back in front with 12:19 remaining in the first. From there, Florida would go on to outscore Alabama 25-10 to close out the half.
The Tide had 12 first half turnover, resulting in 16 points for the Gators. In addition, Florida connected on four of its nine three-point attempts, while Alabama knocked down one of its six tries from long range.
The Gators continued to outscore the Tide in the second half, going ahead by as many as 27 in the game.
For the game, Florida shot 39.7 percent from the floor (25-for-63), while Alabama was 24.6 percent (16-for-65) from the floor. The Gators out-rebounded the Tide 51-39, including 19 offensive boards.
Next up, Alabama will host Tennessee on Thursday, January 26. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. CT in Foster Auditorium.
