TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A pair of home runs off the bat of sophomore Amanda Locke and a six-run third inning led the Alabama softball team to a convincing 8-0 victory in five innings over Hawai'i in game one of the NCAA Tuscaloosa Super Regional. With the win, the Crimson Tide has now rattled off a school record 28-straight victories to improve to 52-9 on the season.
Junior Kelsi Dunne earned her 17th straight win to improve to 30-4 on the season. Dunne stymied the potent Rainbow Wahine offensive attack, allowing just two hits while striking out seven in five innings.
Freshman Kayla Braud collected three hits while senior Charlotte Morgan drove in three runs. The game was highlighted by Locke, who drove in four on the strength of her two home runs.
Alabama opened the scoring in the second inning when Locke easily cleared the wall in centerfield for a solo shot, giving the Tide an early 1-0 lead. The home run was the 16th on the season for the Mesquite, Texas, native tying her for the team lead.
Morgan took advantage of loaded bases in the third and as she ripped a two-run single in the right-center gap to score pinch-runner Lisa Elizondo and Braud. Junior Whitney Larsen immediately followed with a single to center to plate sophomore Cassie Reilly-Boccia from third to extend the Alabama lead to 4-0.
Locke continued the offensive onslaught in the frame, nailing her second home run of the game, lining a three-run shot over the wall in center to expand the Tide lead to 7-0.
Alabama continued to chip away as it tallied a single run in the fourth to run the score to 8-0. Morgan did the damage, this time with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score sophomore Jennifer Fenton.
Alabama and Hawai'i return to action almost immediately, after a brief 30-minute break, with game two which will also be on ESPNU as well as ESPN3.com. Originally game one was supposed to take place Friday night with game two starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, but inclement weather in the Tuscaloosa area scrapped day one. Due to the threat of storms later in the afternoon the game started at 11 a.m. Saturday.
