TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama softball team hit four home runs, including a grand slam and three in the same inning to run past Troy 12-2 Tuesday night at the Alabama Softball Complex. The win is the 12th in a row for the Crimson Tide as Alabama improves to 36-9 on the season.
"It was probably one of the most fun games all year," Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. "It was easy for us coaches today to just stand there and give everyone high fives as they rounded third base. The grand slam was awesome. Both pitchers did a great job. It was just a lot of fun to be out there tonight."
Senior Alex Blewitt hit two home runs in the same inning and Charlotte Morgan connected on a grand slam all in the nine-run fourth to power the Tide to 12 runs on nine hits.
Amanda Locke (4-2) earned the win, allowing two runs - one earned - and striking out two in four innings. Lauren Sewell allowed one hit and struck out one in the final inning.
Locke helped her own cause by opening the scoring in the second inning with a prodigious two-run blast to centerfield. The homer scored sophomore Jazlyn Lunceford, who reached base on a fielder's choice.
Troy got a run back in the top of the third as a two-out double by Rocky Paige scored Kala Moore from second. Moore reached on an error and stole second to start the rally.
Alabama then answered after back-to-back bunts by Jennifer Fenton and Kayla Braud. After stealing second and reaching third on the bunt by Braud, Fenton crossed the plate on a passed ball.
The Trojans then hit a solo shot to the right of the scoreboard to put the score at 3-2 in favor of the Tide. Courtney Cherry got a hold of the two-out pitch to pull Troy within one.
Once again the Crimson Tide had an answer and it turned out to be a nine-run fourth inning. Blewitt got a hold of a two strike pitch to extend the lead to 5-2 to start the rally. The senior hit a lined shot that got out in a hurry well over the left field wall.
Alabama continued to pour it on in the inning. After a bases loaded walk by Cassie Reilly-Boccia, Morgan connected on a moon shot to dead-center for a grand slam to make the score 10-2 in the favor of the Tide.
Blewitt struck again in the same inning, this time hitting a two-run shot off the left light pole in centerfield to give Alabama the final 12-2 margin.
Alabama will hit the road for a three-game series in Fayetteville, Ark. The two teams will begin the series with a doubleheader on Saturday that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
